Farmall 20 ~ John Deere #5 mower bolt to drawbar ?

Bought an F20 a long time ago, the fella I purchased it from mentioned something about a John Deere mower bolting right up to the drawbar, and having a foot pedal operate the sickle mower ?

Anyone know what sickle mower mounts on the F-20 ?

Like I said, I THINK it was a JD #5.
My brother has a Farmall H with a matching IH sickle mower, and I want to be on par with him and get myself some sort of sickle mower for my F-20. ha ha

Thanks

The F-20 PTO is listed as 505 rpm at 1200 rpm on the engine. Consulted two original IHC sales brochures. Undoubtedly has the smaller PTO shaft, as the "standard" came in sometime in the 40s, as I recall.
The PTO location does require some adaptation to the shaft. There was no "standard" location before the "standard" location became standard, so many times it was necessary to buy a shaft to fit the particular tractor.

IH had a model No. 10 mower for the F-20

Ahhh so they did have a mower for it... No.10

Thanks, I will do a search on that model of mower.

Though I have never seen one for sale to my recollection, and the JD #5 seems to be a fairly common mower.

Yep,

#5 and/or the #8 will bolt up.

"IF" the mower has the mower-side drawbar. #5 uses a foot "lift" and the #8 used a hydraulic cylinder.

like this one? in reply to Allan In NE, 04-24-2008 13:15:51
Thanks for the info about a #5 and #8.

This is a #5 for sale in the photo ads on this site: JD #5 mower

small photo I know, but in your glimpse does it look like a fitting candidate?

See those two "ears" sticking out front? They are the clamps that mount it to the sides of a JD tractor, which has been fitted with the special JD drawbar round mounts.

To put it on a different model tractor, you'll need the "flat" drawbar that clamps inside of those ears. This flat bar is what bolts to the U on your tractor.

Lousey picture. Call him up and see if he'll send ya a better picture, perferably from the front. I could tell ya better if I could see it better.

Or, better yet. Just ask him if he still has the flat drawbar to go with it.

Much thanks Allan,
I will call him tonite when I get off work and ask he has the "flat drawbar" and the "foot pedal". And possibly ask if he as a better photo too, ha ha.

Hard to tell from that picture, but it might have already been converted to hydraulic lift.

As far as I know, the bolt-to-the-drawbar type sickle mowers are pretty generic. That's why a green one fits a red tractor so easily. All you need is a U-shaped drawbar and a PTO that doesn't exceed 540RPM.

I'm thinking the F20 PTO is a 520RPM, and may be the wrong size spline (1-1/8" diameter vs. the standard 1-3/8"), but that can be fixed with an adapter. It's also tucked up under the transmission, so a longer PTO shaft might be required.

Other than that, you can pretty much mount any sickle bar out there. Hydraulics would be handy, though.

PTO would be close to my legs in reply to mkirsch, 04-24-2008 12:46:13
You are right about the PTO being tucked way up there. My F-20 was fitted with the aftermarket foot brakes that are behind the axles. Though it does have one hand brake left, it has the toothed catch on it and is for a parking brake more or less.

To be safe, I would buy and install the other hand brake and leave the tooth catch off, that way I do NOT have my feet behind the rear axle dangerously close to the PTO.

No hydraulics on my F-20, that is why #5 with "foot pedal" would be needed.

According to the JD #5 book, there is a different set up depending on the style of drawbar. Should be able to make it work, but I don't know how easy it is to find the foot lever, and that set up sure looks like the PTO shaft is really close to your feet/pant leg.
