Forgot in my last post to include this.. probably driving some folks nuts with so many questions... On a 41 M, are the brakes discs, bands, or a combination of the two? I have heard several different ideas.. want to get the deal before I buy parts, don't want to open it up until I have them.

I have a 41 M that has disc brakes, you could order them that way. Probably 15 years ago the discs were on the dealer parts screen,at that time they were 55 bucks each. If IH would have copied them we wouldn't have the problem of grooved brake shafts like we find now. Those discs had twice as many splines and were about 1/2in wide were they slid on the brake shaft

They are band brakes.

You can purchase a good used set on ebay for $35 - $45.

Good luck pulling off the pans, ha ha.

While you are on ebay go ahead and purchase the drum covers, as most likely your adjustments nut on the bottom of the drum is frozestuckbroken beyond repair.

its easy to tell just by looking, the band type has a light metal pan type cover over them.the discs have a smaller round cast cover over them.

Your M would have band brakes unless someone converted them to disc brakes.

Most M's were bands. Some were factory bands and some were converted. The super M's were disk.

the m's up until the very late ones all had band brakes, late 51-52they switched over to disc. however there were companys that made aftermarket disc brake kits for the m, lambert was one of them.

I think that M's could be special ordered with the lambert disk brakes, I know that H's could be. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)
