For Jim N, John T, Farmer Bob, Andy Motteberg, Jossette, Mike CA, et al:

Due to the pending (end of April) shutdown Epson's photo sharing, site I copied all of the more frequently viewed Farmall wiring diagrams to a new album on Flickr.

A link to the new album is below.

----

Note - Since I posted these diagrams on Epson several years ago they've had over 300,000 views. Somebody must be looking at 'em(!)

The generator on my 504 died (arm that holds the brushes rusted away) and I want to convert to an alternator. The one wire delco seems to be the choice, but do I need the adapter and does this one wire just go to the battery, or, do I need to bypass the tractor voltage regulator? Any help appreciated.

I talked with one company that sells the single post alternator and adapter for the alternator to replace the generator. He said the adapter would raise the alternator an inch and a half and there might not be clearance under the hood? Also, he recommended wiring the single post off the alternator to the Amp meter and from the other amp meter post to the same post on the solenoid that the battery attaches too (positive). Is this what you all recommend and does anyone have experience with this? Any help appreciated.

Bill - I prefer the old tractors myself. My wife is more the railfan - though she likes the old tractors too. Punch the link below for a few albums of our railroad shots.

Expect to be posting my photos 2008 tractor shows etc. on my Photobucket account: http://s101.photobucket.com/albums/m46/farmallbob/

Thanks a bunch, Bob. We've even used the H w/mag diagram to wire an SC Case w/mag. The electrical system might think it on a Farmall, but the SC doesn't care. All lights, etc work just fine & the battery stays charged. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

Bob M, thank you SO MUCH for your diagrams, I don't know what I would have done without them.... You-R-Da-Man! Do you have a Diagram for a H / M 12 volt alternator conversion, with Magneto (Push-Pull Switch)?

When I start my 1941 H (With Magneto), I have to get off the tractor and touch the # 1 wire to the Hot Terminal of the Alternator, to excite....

Now, after I excite the alternator, its good to go and when I turn the tractor off, go back in a hour, start it up again, it will take off charging.... I believe it starts charging, cause I put a Small Pully on the 10-S1 alternator.

Thanx, Bob M!

I'll add to Bobs good solutions one that keeps it looking stock at the controls point of view.
From NAPA, buy a oil pressure switch with two terminals that is closed with pressure above 5PSI.
Wire this from starter switch battery terminal, to the oil sw, then from the other term to the #1 on alt. Thus when running it automatically gets exciting voltage, and when stopped, that sw stops the exciting volts. JimN

Jim N: Thank you very much, for the good info on the oil pressure switch. I WILL go to NAPA or Carquest and get me one. Both auto parts, are Real close.

Thanx, again Jim N

BTW, you're not related to Jack, are you!? ;-)

FarmallDude - Thanks for your kind words!

Probably the simplest solution to your problem is to wire up a pushbutton switch to the alternator #1 terminal. Upon startup hit the button to “flash” the alternator so it will begin charging.

Another option is to replace the original push-pull ignition switch with a DPDT toggle switch. Use one pole to short the magneto in the “off” position, and the other pole to feed power to the alt #1 terminal in the “run” position.

I have diagrams for both. If you open up your email I'll send 'em along.
