Loadin' up a SuperC -- how much?

This question might be better on the pullin' board but I thought I'd throw it out.

Neighbor asked me last night how much deadweight I thought my SuperC would drag. Seems a mutual friend has been enticed by scrap prices to haul all the clunkers out of his woods and clean his place up (a good idea!).

I need to go up and look the situation over before I'll agree to what I can do. The fella in question can be a bit of a cowboy, but I'm a nut about drawbar only hitches and know well the dangers of snags and the weird footing you can get into in the woods as opposed to open ground, and he isn't gonna persuade me to do something stupid. But I suspect it will be draggin', not rollin'.

Question is do you see any problem with a SuperC runnin' good draggin' out some old 5,000-pound Hudsons and DeSotos over a reasonably clear path to where the scrapman can get at them to load 'em up??

if you put a couple of skids or timbers under them cars they would probably pull out a lot easier.

Don't know what your super C will drag but as a collector of old Hudsons would like to know what is there before they go to the scrap. Even if the frames and floor pans are totally rusted away there will be things like trim bits, tail light lenses, etc which I am sure some one near by would like an opportunity to salvage. Any idea what years the Hudsons are?

No idea, Karl. I still have to go up and look things over and not sure I could tell you once I have. (I can tell ya a '66 from a '67 GTO, but the Hudsons were pretty much gone by my time!)

I'll post back on here, though, to let folks know what I've found.

I'd love to take photos of those old cars before they go away!

If the old hulks are sunk into the ground, you'll never move 'em unless you dig 'em out first, and then the tires will be all rotted away so you will basically be draggin' it on its frame. A super C is a fairly stout machine for its size, but I don't think you will be real successful. Having said that, there ain't nuthin' wrong giving it a try. I don't think you will hurt anything.

I haven't been up to look it over yet, but I expect that on a lot of them tires are out of the question and, as you say, they'll be right down on their frames. Honesttagawd, there are Hudsons and DeSotos in there, been there for years, stuff that his grandfather abandoned when the place was his. The woods they're in have flooded any number of times (we're takin' advantage of a dry spell to try and get this stuff out) so expect a lot of them are stuck but good.

The neighbor that asked me about this has a lot lighter tractor but with a good bucket. I'm thinkin' we might need for him to get the edge of his bucket underneath where he can and tilt the bucket to try and break them free from the ground before I ever tie onto them to try and drag 'em out.

I wouldn't touch that situation with the equipment you guys have. You'd both be a lot safer to go and rent a dozer or have someone with a dozer pull those cars out. I can't begin to count the number of things that can go wrong with pulling old half-buried cars out of a swamp full of trees.

I hear what you're sayin', I can count all right, too, and I'm not above pullin' the plug and sayin' this won't work. (Dunno if you've followed any of my posts over the last coupla years, but when this neighbor and the mutual friend in question get goin' on somethin', I'm the one supplyin' the adult supervision.)

I wouldn't let the guy with the smaller tractor attempt to lift these things, but rockin' his bucket back, if he can get it under the edge, may get them loose to where I can drag 'em.

I'll go up tomorrow and look things over. A jillion things to look at, like you said. How hard are they stuck? What's the surface, what kind of paths can I get . . . ? If I think I can help, I'll try.

I know what you mean about adult supervision ...

The least dangerous approach I can think of using the equipment that you have available would be to run a chain over the top of the car body and around a window pillar and try to turn it over. It would then slide a heck of a lot easier on its top.

This would require getting to the side of the car, though. You may have to take out some trees to get the cars out since some (or many) will have trees grown up through them.
