Tractor was running and I shut it down. Tried to restart and nothing. Removed the started and cleaned it and all connections. Tried rocking the tractor while in high gear and still nothing. When trying to start I notice that I was pulling lots of amps.
Any ideas.

I would remove the starter and clean the bendix then give it a little oil so it can move free.Probably have bad connections and the starter doesent get good amperage to enguage.

Gentlemen, if you read his first post, he says he removed the starter.

Dewey, if you completely removed the starter from the tractor, and that didn't help, you have a bad starter motor. It needs to be taken to a professional, and rebuilt or replaced.

Your local AutoZone or Napa should be able to test the starter for you.

Most larger towns have shops that specialize in servicing starters.

If you're mechanically inclined, you could pull the starter apart and service it yourself. Replace the starter drive, clean up the commutator, replace the brushes and bearings... None of it is terribly difficult, but you lack a way to determine if the windings are burned. If the windings are damaged, the starter is worthless.

Loosen the bolts on the starter and see if it will free itself. Hal

Are you saying that it is drawing lots of amps but the starter does not turn at all , or is the starter turning but the tractor not starting? If it is drawing lots of amps but the starter not turning that means that your starter is locked.

Yes, it's drawing lots of amps and the starter will not turn.

What's the best way to unlock a starter?

Remove the starter and unlock the drive, if it locks again on the tractor, replace the drive with a new one.

The best way I know of it to put the tractor in gear and then rock the tire back and forth by hand. If it works, you will hear a click or a metallic slap inside of the bell housing when the gear pulls back out.
