IH 424D - Fuel tank Pressure

I have a 424D that "pressurizes" the fuel tank after running for a while. The tank cap looks to be original. It is about 2 1/2 to 3" tall with two tangs to engage the tank filling spout and has a seal gasket. Stamped into the top of the cap is "Buy clean fuel-keep it clean".

I filled the tank with diesel to about 90% and ran the tractor about three hours continuance - bushhoging. Tractor ran perfect. Shut the engine down (after idling for a few minutes to cool) and removed the cap to refuel. The pressure released from twisting the cap off almost blew the cap out of my hand. Looking at the cap I can find no venting mechanism. Never had a tank that "pressured up" before.

What do I do? What's the cause and cure? It's got to vent somehow or the tank would form a partial vacuum as the fuel is reduced in the tank. But, why would it pressure up? Thanks! bob f.

does that have a tank behind the seat, built into the fenders and platform? the latest version of that type, like a 685 cih, had a tube running from the top all the way to an opening on the bottom of the tank, pretty much straight down from the filler hole. can't comment on earlier versions, as that is the only one i've had the opportunity to run.

You had pressure build up in the tank because the vent is plugged and as you used the tractor the returned fuel heated the air inside.

Early caps had the vents on the under side along the outer seam. There are a couple of places where the seam in not completely crimped. This cap was replaced with one that had a single hole in the top center. Current production caps have two vent holes in the top.

Diesels are more likely to plug the vents than gasoline engines and plugging of the vents is what caused IH to implement the free gas cap replacement program. There were cases like yours where pressure built up in gasoline tanks and when the tank was opened the vapors rushed out and resulted in fires. Diesel fuel is less likely to cause problems so they were not included in the free cap program.

Thanks Karlf, Owen Ashland and Bob(424D) for your answers. I'll look the cap over again for a vent(s) and try to fix or drill a hole (underside) or get another cap. Dang thing is dangerous. Comment about heated fuel return expanding air in the tank makes sense. Thanks again. bob f.

My GUESS would be that the vent in the cap is clogged. I have a 424D with a simple basic cap (NOT that high "safety uni"), and have never had a problem with pressure in the tank (or fuel slobbering out around the cap), for that matter.
