I have a 1974 Farmall 140 and was wondering if it came with a 6 or 12 volt system. It has a generator but the battery looks to be a 12 volt. The negative on the battery is grounded to the frame.

140s with alternator are serial number 57724 and above. Yours falls between 45001 and 57723, 12 volt generator, negative ground, key start, with 4 way flashers.

It definitely would have been 12 volt. 140 electrical changed 4 times during production. It went from 6 volt generator, two different systems with 12 volt generator and finally 12 volt alternator. I have the wiring diagrams for all 4 systems and the serial number split when the changes occured.

If you wish give me the serial number and I can tell you exactly what you have. You are very close to models with alternator, in fact I think it happened prior to 74. I only have the figures on serial number, and have never translated those into years.
