Hi, my grandpa is looking at a early 70s 656 hydro utility. he wanted me yo do some research on these tractors. was there any common problems with them. Can the hydro drive be a nightmare if it isn"t working right? If anyone has any opinions or experiences with these tractors. please share them. thanks Joe

Hydro tractors are nice loader and chore tractors, only thing is once the hydro goes out, look out 5k and up to rebuild, make sure you service it like the manuel says and dont do and massive pulling like plowing for days, only other trouble is the drive coupler and shaft(were a clutch and flywheel are on a gear drive) The splines were out, the foot inch valve can cause few problems, but not many, good luck

I don't know much about fixing them, but if the hydro works they are about the best loader tractor out there. A friend who worked on a big feedlot had one there and I mean to tell you that you couldn't beat it for loader work. I used it pushing in posts and hauling manure and it was pretty nice compared to my 706. I have also heard that they were nice in the hayfield too. What is he going to use it for?

It will be used to do about 25 acres of hay, some brush hogging, snow plowing, maybe some plowing

What do you mean, "couldn't beat it for loader work?" Any 45 hp skid steer loader will run circles around it on loader work.

As for the hayfield, at the end of the day, the same size gear drive tractor will have baled just as much hay.

Hugh, your comment about baling brings up something that people don't seem to understand. A plugged-up baler meant that someone didn't do their job right. When we baled with a ground-drive PTO tractor we had to be careful and get the right-sized uniform windrows. A windy day or a patch of sweet clover would make things more difficult, but on a good day we didn't have any need for independent or live PTO.

steve: I get a kick out of all todays tractor requirments for baling hay, how much hp it requires, question like, "will 90hp handle my NH 68 baler", just for example. When history is written, since the beginning of small square bales, 50% of all small square bales ever made were done by tractors under 40 hp.

I haven't done as many bales as you, but we never had a live PTO tractor until I was seventeen. By then I'd probably baled 10,000 bales.

We baled mostly for our own livestock, and our ground was too hilly for the John Deere B with an IH 45 baler. We used the Farmall M. We moved up to an Oliver 88 and JD 14T and thought it was great.
