Rear Axle Ballist or weights on 856....

I have 15.5/38 bias tires with air on my 856 right now. A 4 bottom plow makes me slip quite a bit, obviously. I got a great deal on a set of used 16.9/38 Good Year radials with 75% tread to put on the tractor. The larger tire size would work better in the field too because the 15.5 are a bit too small. I have a loader on the tractor. I am going to be using the tractor for pulling 14' sweep/chisle & a 4 or 5 bottom land plow. How much weight do I need per rear axle either with weights or ballisting. Or, is there a formula that makes it easy to determine. I know I will need front weights too. Thanks, Dan Swanson

Thanks for the info... in reply to Dan Swanson, 04-20-2008 19:14:31
I appreciate it! I have access to a set of 15.5 clamp on duals. Would it work to put fluid in the 15.5's on the tractor and add about 500 lbs of weights per each axle and then use the duals with air for summer fallow? Could then drop them off for the light work like mowing. The chisle is a 14' & I only go down 5-6" in wheat stubble. Hit it twice before putting the sweep shovels on. My grand father used a 730 JD with single tires to pull it years ago with no problems.
Thanks, Dan Swanson

Dan, The duals will really help and save fuel anytime on soft or tilled soil, If a 730 pulled it you could go half again bigger. 15.5's are not going to take the power that tractor has without a lot of slipage, if you stay with them for now I recommend you stick with the 4 bottom. Please understand too I live in SE Minnesota with heavy black soil, yours may be entirely different. Good luck, Chuck

I have 18.4-38 radials with fluid, that is minimum for 5 bottoms. Not sure what you mean by a sweep/chisle? If it is a standard chisel plow it is too much for an 856. If it is a field cultivator you will pull it easily. If you are working on plowed ground get a set of duals, you can't afford not to with the price of diesel now. Good luck, Chuck

Agree with Allan, get the loader off if you want to run it in the field. 856 needs loaded 18.4x38 at least and about 4 sets of wheel weights.

Yep, 15.5s are too small for that tractor.

I'd sure get that loader off because it makes the front of the tractor nose heavy in a way that robs from the rear (moves the center of gravity forward).

Then, if you still have a slip problem, call the tire shop and have 'em fill the rears with calcium.

Shouldn't need any more than that because that is a pretty big tractor anyway.

Allan
