MD Starting on Gas Blues Part 2

Ok heres the new update,

Just got in the house from trying the MD again. With another bettery still won't kick. I moved the diesel side so it is completely shut off now atleast the smoke is gone, but the tractor won't even kick now. pulled on plug and it was dry as can be. not even a smell of gas on it. so now i am thinking its a fuel problem. i took the air intake pipe off, try starting it, couldn't really hear much of a sucking sound, until i put the choke on even then it didn't seem to pronounced. when i had the intake off i checked the carb and could blow through it with out a problem, and when the float was closed it stoped the flow like it should.

What is tickling me is why it will shitch to gas no problem from diesel and why it runs SO good when it does finally run on gas

Sometimes and i mean sometimes, like 6 times since i owned the tractor, it started on gas WITHOUT a hitch 2 turns of the motor. Whats with that!!! i'm sure they are all linked somehow, i know we will figure it out

Check the impulse on the magneto. That's about the only thing I can think of that's different between starting on gas & running on gas after switching from diesel to gas. If the impluse isn't working, you'll have a hard time getting a good spark at cranking speeds, but it will work just fine at idle speeds.

You should be able to hear the impluse click as you crank the engine. Have you checked to make sure you have a good spark at cranking speed?

Since it switches back to gas from deisel and runs good then, I'd tend to believe all the basic systems are functioning properly.

What would be the difference between cranking with the starter and switching to gas from deisel? Yep- RPM's. For some reason it's hard to get going when the engine is turning low(cranking) RPM's. Off the top of my head this could maybe be two things- One, there's a slight vacumn leak someplace that's not letting there be enough suction to pull gas through the carb at cranking speeds, but at higher RPM's(idling on deisel) there's enough to get things flowing. Second thing, and this is more of a guess than anything, it could be ignition related- does this have a mag or a distributor? If it's a mag, maybe it's not spinning fast enough at cranking speeds to build a good spark? Do these tractors, if they have mags, have an impulse coupling like the older F-series tractors did?

Matt, I'm thinking you have some valve problems on the gas side possibly from the diesel needing adjusting to shut off while starting. With choking you should be able to flood the plugs! Try the gas in plug hole trick, if that works you have to figure out why you aren't pulling gas in while cranking. Maybe put some Marvel Mystery Oil in the gas and run it on gas for a while. Don't remember if we shut it off on gas and no longer have one or a manual but don't think so. Maybe try a small propane torch UNLIT in intake while cranking, would tell you if you need to look at fuel supply problems.

You can try this. Set it up for gas start, remove plugs pour a little gas down each bore, replace plugs and try a start. If it fires up your problem is fuel supply. I'm not going to second guess that one. MTF

I feel for you, mine is exactly the same, except I just figured it was the nature of the beast. I bought mine in January and was late March before it started at all. Am going to start taking mine apart today to adjust the linkage according to I&T manual per earlier instructions. Will let you know if it works, check classifieds if it don"t!

P.F., You sure you want to do all that work and maybe still be frustrated, when I have all this room in my shop and haven't been around an MD in 20 years. Scrap price is high for a non functioning tractor, thing about it. LOL

I'd go back to the basics....an engine needs three things to run 1) Spark, 2) compression, and 3) fuel. I'd pull the plugs and run a compression check on all cylinders making sure that they are all within 10% of each other. It's a safe bet that you have good compression since the tractor runs on diesel (but it's still worth a check as there could be a problem with the gas side of the valving). Next, I'd check each spark plug by grounding on the side of the engine and making sure that all fire hot while turning the engine. If you get good compression and good spark, then you can turn your attention to the fuel side.

Remember, part of the switch-over mechanism are two butterfly valves that close the air off from the carburetor. I know that when I pulled my intake manifold off my MD, I had to make sure that the switch made this valve function properly when I re-installed.

i take it you have good spark. like when you move the lever to the gas side you will see the amp. meter flick a little to discharge.on diesel the spark is cut off.you didnt say if you had the carb apart.sounds like you just checked the needle and seat, by blowing in it.there could something actually in the jet causing no fuel to be sucked into the venturie.nothing really in those little carbs for parts. i would give it a soaking in carb cleaner and rinse in water and blow out the passages good with air.if you have spark and fuel you should get an explos ion.
