ive been fooling with old engines trucks cars tractors all my life . ive replaced my share of main and rod bearings. the only way i know to remove the upper half of the main bearings is to walk them out with a small screwdriver. is there a better way to get them out? ive thought about a thin piece of narrow springy steel strip to push up on the bearings . ive has left shoulder surgery cant raise my arm up very much and the right one is just as bad there has to be a easier way to get these buggers out sure could use some ideas

You can use a brass rivet,a nail like they said,Caterpillar even makes a tool that has a swivel head on it to account for the angle of the oil gallery.Heres how I do it.Take about three mains loose,should be able then with a table knife that you beat into a half circle shape to reach up there and push it a ways out on 2 of them.I am thinking of a diesel now,that has 5 mains.A gas motor may just have 3,and you might get it with the knife if you loosen the middle one,then do the ends,but leave them a little loose,then the middle one before you torque them down.What you dont want to do is pull all of the caps off because it could mess up the seals.You always want to have it only a little loose,but holding the crank up good.It doesnt take much once you get used to it.Also my way you dont have to turn the crank usually.If you do need to turn the crank you may want to tighten the middle one back up and all but a couple on a diesel.You can use a real long feeler gauge.I have one table knife that I filed the end flat on that I use most.The main thing you want is for it to push out easy.You want to loosen your belts on the front too,that helps.If you cant get that to work,a nail,or brass rivet works good if you have some help to turn the motor for you.Also snug all of them up,break them loose,then back up in 3 stages to the right torque.You want to make sure you get it all back up right.I always go over my bolts again in sequence,and most usually have a couple that are loose,even with a Snap On torque wrench.

\humm sounds like a winner to me. you're saying to stick a rivit in the hole of the crank like you where going to pop it correct? then turn the crank right?

More or less:
The hole in the crank journal for lube to get in, needs to be turned downward so you have access.
A 16d common nail, not one with a countersunk head, (the head on those is too thick)cut to about 3/4", with the head bent slightlynto one side (because the oil hole is usually not directly straight into the crank, test it in the hole as you prepare for it to be used).
Make sure you turn the crankshaft in the direstion that causes the upper insert to be rotated out pushing the locating tab out of its recess, not trying to drag it into the space it should not go in!!
As the crank is rotated, the insert rolls out. No problems. JimN

Remember you have to turn the crank BACKWARD to roll the tang out of the block, some OLD OLD motor manuals recommend the cotter key trick.

the crankshaft journal has a hole where the oil goes from the main to the rod journal. there might be one main that dosent have a hole, but most do

you can use a small cotter pin in the lube hole and roll them out

yep them rod bearings aint bad the mains are killing me i actually took a 4ft long rubber band and tied my left arm up where i could keep it up there to try to get the mains out i got one but i couldnt stand to get the other well i gess theres always tomorrow :D thanks for your reply ejr-IA

i take it your doing this with crank in engine, thats about the only way.need to use something like that to push out the brg.thats the way i have done it when you just want to roll in a new set of brgs.

My Dad use to take a small roofing nail and cut it off and stick it in the oil hole in the journal and turn it over real slow. Worked like a charm!
