I had that happen twice for two different reasons. First reason, wires on distributor connected in clockwise direction, but the distributor rotation was counterclockwise. This of course puts things out of time and the engine tried to start on only one or two cylinders. Second reason. Timing 180 degrees out due to magneto which has only two lobes on breaker cam and 2 to 1 gears to time the points to the 4 wire distributor cap. Both these situations will cause oil to be blown back out the air cleaner in my experience.

A stuck intake valve can do it, as can a bit of moisture in the distributor,or mag cap, causing a cylinder to fire on the wrong cycle. If the engine trys to start, and spins backward, it can also do it. JimN

The timing is off, or if your hand cranking it you could be spinning it backwards.

You can't crank it backwards because the crank only engages "frontwards".

You cannot turn the engine by cranking it "backwards", try it on your tractor and it won't work.

Hey Roger, is this something that just started reasently? I would say you're timing is off. try rotating the distributor housing either way, you will see where you can loosen the housing and rotate it either way

Good Luck Matt
