I was thinking about converting my super h to 12 volt but wanted to still look like its 6 volts. Can this be done. I want to keep the battery under the gas tank and dont want to add an alternator. Could you rebuild a generator for 12 volt. Can you use the same wiring harness. I want the brighter lights for when driving at night and want it to turn over easier but want it to look like it just rolled off the assembly line. Can this be done? Thanks.

Just curious, ya want 12v and for it to look like it just came off the assembly line, correct. Well if ya use an alternator, who is going to see it? It would be up under the hood and how many people are going to walk up and look under your hood to see if it has a generator or alternator?? hhmmmmm

If you use a Mitsubishi or Hytachi alternaor, would fit under the hood with room to spare...Now I'm not advocating switching to 12v but if your going to convert why not go to some far more effecient less trouble some. As for 12v battery there are number of them that will fit in an older tractor 6v battery box.

I converted Son's SC to 12v, battery box is in limited space,9 3/8 long. I built new box out of 10 gage sheet metal which limited me even more making inside measurement 9 1/8" haven't had a problem finding a battery to fit, Even Wal Mart has a few.

SC with alternator since it is the same color as tractor most people don't even notice third party image

Like Gene said--get a generator from a 450D--looks the same--then get the 12-volt regulator to go along, & you're ready to go. Same wiring harness--ready to go.

You certainly have my permission to scold me if I am hi-jacking this thread, but I have a question on the very same subject. If a person didn't want to put in a diode or light and wanted a switch to excite the alternator to make it charge, where in line would he put it in this exact photo? Thanks.

Just get a 12v gen for the later models it will bolt and look just like the 6v ones only will have a red tag instead of the black one you have now and by using your wiring diagrahm in the manual you will have the original look as you can use the original wireing harness and lites just change the bulbs. You realy dont need brighter lites anyhow for a tractor going 20mph at nite. Just how did we farm with them when new the lite worked just fine.

as the others have written, yes, we did that to a b and if the batt box and cover was on you could not tell it was 12 volt

if you can find em, the early 1960's chevys had 12v gennys in em. they are the same size as the 6v gennys.

That`s what I did on my super C was had the genny rewound to 12v, also took in
the regulator. The battery on mine was in a battery box so I just replaced it.Then I swapped all lights.I left the starter as is,I figure if it burns out someday then I`ll have it rewound as well.Been cranking fast for 3 years so far.Jeff

Rebuild it the genny to 12v it looks 100% orginal and works well, We have 54 Super with a Hitichie alternator and it fits under the hood but, perosnal if i was to do it again i would rebuild the genny to 12v. Its going to cost you about the same in either case from what i found when i was doing it.
