Hi--I recently bought an M that has not run for 3 years. Towed it home and started working on it. I put a new battery in and it turns over OK without any sparkplugs. But installing even one plug bogs it down. Took the starter off and went thru it with a growler and cleaned and undercut the commutator. Brushes are good. This did not help at all. I also by passed the switch, cleaned all connections, tried a 12 volt battery, directly jumped the starter with heavy cables and nothing helped. Then took the starter to s professional shop and they declared it good and strong. brought it home and tried it again and NO CHANGES. Almost as if there is some internal drag in the engine, but it spins nicely with no plugs. Thanks in advance for any ideas, as I am baffled in Illinois.

Those old h's and m's only need to turn over compression to start. They don't need to spin like a diesel to start. Make sure the ign is in good order and it will fire up. Make sure the ground cable goes to a bolt on or near the starter.

I know on my Drag car that when the battery was put in the trunk it had the same problem.

I had a brand new battery cables on it and everything was new. It took having a ground from the engine block to ground as well as off the battery to solve the problem. The ground has to be good and proper gauge, make sure there isn"t any paint keeping it from grounding good to the block.

I had a friend who couldn"t get a custom Harley started ! I scraped some paint to get a good ground and it started .

Sure hope this is all it is for you.

Replace all the cables, they need to be heavy for 6 volts, 2 gauge or heavier, most on this forum will say 00. Not turning over with 12 volts indicates you have a lot of corrosion. It can be hidden under the insulation. I have always had better luck either with new cables or at least cleaning the connections than I have connecting directly to the starter.
