I am working on a farmall 450 gas and the charging system doesn't work. It has a 12 volt battery in it for that matter. wires look ok. Any hints gents?

It was 6 volt when new on the gas version. It was 12 volts on the diesel.. Your tractor may have been converted since your tractor has been running and you didn't mention any starting problems. Hal
PS: Post a picture of the alternator or generator.

No starting problems at all, but it has a new starter on it. the amp meter does go slightly to the discharge side when it is started. It looks to have a rebuilt generator on it also. I couldn't find a tag on the generator to see if it was a 12 volt one. By the way sorry for the poor start of the thread. I should know better than to not give enough details. Thanks again

Was this tractor convered to 12 volts? Do you have an alternator or generator? Take a volt meter and check the charging voltage at the battery with the engine at 1/2 throttle or better.
Should be getting 14-14.5 volts. Hal
PS: Your 12 volt battery should be negative grounded with an alternator.

This is a charity job and his book just doesn't say anything about the charging system. It still has a generator. At half throttle it has like 11.5 volts. Less than not running. so I suspect the charging systems not working. Thanks for the information it will make a nice starting point.
