Our 966"s front end is getting pretty loose, and I am looking at tightening it back up. A big part of the problem is that the splines are shot between the steering arm and the kingpin or spindle on the right side. I can see the tie rod and steering arm move about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch and the wheel doesn"t turn at all. They were welded together 18 years ago and the welds are all cracking through. Has anyone had luck with A&I spindles, or should I just look around a junkyard for originals? Are the taper lock ones worth the extra money? I guess I would like the front end to last another 40+ years after the rebuild.

Thanks.

If the thrust bearing and bushings are good, just grind out some of the welding, position the arm in the correct orientation and reweld it. The spindle, arm and nut are junk anyway so you don't have much to lose. If the bearing and/or bushings are bad, that is the time for new parts.

Hello,
I have installed a few spindles from my supplier and they seem to hold up good. I can't say they are any better or worse than A&I. the biggest thing is not let the nuts run loose.
good luck Ed

I have two of the taper locks and I don't like them they won't stay tight as long as original equipment and they cost twice as much the last time I looked. The old style ones on an 06 series that were keyed were the best, but they probably wouldn't work on a 66. Lee

I have the tie rod parts if you need them and I am pretty sure I can get the spindles. Email me if you are interested. Kevin

After market spindles are around 190 and the arms at 40.

Will spindles from a salvage yard be any better than what you have? If that tractor were mine, I think I'd go with A&I. Do it right and you won't have to do it again.
