Hoping to get the 2+2 painted before fieldwork starts, but as warm and windy as it has been the last couple of days here in Wisconsin I think we might be running out of time. Wondering what type paint you guys recommend as well as Additives? clear coat? Color Codes? We really want a good job and it to last, not fade! Just looking for your oppinions. Thanks Guys

We are about 1hr west of Madison and an 1hr south of Lacrosse. You won't need any clear coat if you use an enamel paint. I usually don't mix by the ratio on the can. I mix it until the consistency looks right to me. Just the way I was tought maybe not the right way but never had any problems spraying or with fading. Spray your first coat as a "see-through" coat meaning you can still see your primer through it then the second coat a little heavier then the third coat spray it like you want to see it. You won't need any primer if you don't fix any dents or scratches but if you have bare metal you will need primer. Just get some from your local auto parts store. Have a good one.

I usually go right to CaseIH and get the paint probably about $40 a gallon but you get the right color unlike some hardware store color that say they are IH red. Then I go to my local auto parts store and get a gallon of enamel reducer and a pint of enamel hardener. It is cheaper that way. I don't know if I would go with a base coat/clear coat finish it is alot pricer maybe only if it was a show only tractor defenitly not if I was going to use it in the field. What part of WI are you from? I live in Boscobel.

Couple more questions. What does the enamel reducer do, and what proportions do you mix the paint/ reducer/ hardener? Also, are there certain reducers, hardeners, and clear coats (if I choose to fork out the extra $ on it) that are and aren't compatable with the CNH paint? The sheet Metal is faded, but rust free. Do I need to Prime is first? if so, is there a certain type of primer? Want to do a real good job. Thanks again!

The reducer does 2 things, thins the paint a little making it easier to spray, and helps it "cure" faster. I've noticed that when you spray the Case paint without reducer it takes awhile to dry to the touch. With the reducer in it you usually can handle the parts within a half hour or so. The hardener does just what it sounds like it would do. Makes the paint hard. Helps it resist oil and fuels. You don't want to splash gasoline or diesel on to a paint job without hardener in it. It will dull and maybe even wrinkle up if it sits on it long enough. I think about any acrylic reducer will work with Case paint. I've used Dupont before. Mix it about 4 parts paint with 1 part reducer. Our Case dealer sells Valspar hardener to use with the Case paint. Just a good splash per gun full of paint is sufficient.
