About 10 years I bought an aftermarket set of bands for a customers M. They were to long to adjust up. I ended up cutting 5/16in out of the metal and welding them back, worked fine then. Since then I take them to a clutch and brake shop and have them relined, about the same price but with the softer compound they use in linings they work a lot better.

I just looked at a one for friend that couldn't get his brakes adusted up. I scratched my head for a while. the only thing that i could see was that brake band was to long. but couldn't prove it. I left scratching my head. I will check back with him to see what he found.

Henry,

They are just like any other brake; they have to "break in". Use the tractor/brakes a little and you'll have your brakes. All adjustment is done at the turnbuckle.

That adjustment screw at the bottom of the pan has absolutely nothing to do with the functioning of the brakes other than it "centers" the "loop" of the band around the brake drum when not applied.

Supposed to keep the band from needless "wearing" when the brake is released.

Allan

Have replaced brakes on couple of Ms. Never been able to get the brake covers off without loosening or taking off the nuts that hold the drawbar bracket to the axle. Been a while though. Is there a chance the bands were installed backwards

If that adjustment isn't doing anything they are likely worn beyond adjusting.Loosen the jamb nut at the bottom of the pans and turn the screw in a turn at a time and see if that gives you brakes. Pull a pan off and observe, maybe oil leaking through the seal has affected the brake...8 studs and its off, tha actuating arm comes off with the brake pan.

8 studs and it is off huh... =)

more like 8 studs... then you can pull for about 1 month on the pan and curse and beat it and stick in a 3 foot pry bar and then pray it will come off is more like it, ha ha. Those pans are SOOOOO O hard to get off, ha ha.

Should had said, new brakes. Does he small bolt at the bottom of the pan have an effect on how tight the brakes get? Put them in until tight and then backed off one turn. Also when changing brakes on my M it is necessary the remove the top nuts on the drawbar and loosen the bottom ones. Henry

You shouldn't have to touch the draw bar.Arod has eluded to the pan removal..the only complication can be the actuating arm frozen into the transmission casting. There are brass bushings that if greased properly should slide out, however if the busings are worn, full of dirt and rusted into the housing they can be hard to get out, penetrating oil, heat and a good pry bar...

Michael,

Sure like to know how you would get that pan off without loosening the drawbar? No way it will clear the drum and the drawbar mount.

Ya sure you aren't talking about a H?

Allan
