Disassembled my oil pump- found two gaskets under the cover. Two gaskets came with the gasket set. My I&T and IH service manuals both only show one gasket. What does the collective forum wisdom think?

Thanks!

Get the end clearance as close to the low end of the spec as you possibly can.

Well, practicality trumps measurement.

With one gasket (.004), the gears were binding. With two, I have free movement.

Two, it is. Don't see how I have any choice.

Stop at your local NAPA or other decent parts store and pick up a few sticks of plastigage. Get two of the 0.001" to 0.003" and one of the 0.002 to 0.006" size. They are about $3 for 8-10 inches. You'll feel much better measuring it. Besides, you'll need it for the bearings. It will take a little over one stick will do your whole motor.

My pump felt a little tight, but measuring it showed that it was pretty close.

Thanks Greg. Just got back from having the bottom milled. I pretty much had it figured out anyway. My ability to think is inversely proportional to my ability to get anxious that I'm gonna screw something up all to h*ll. Once I had it all apart and started measuring things, I got the drift of it.

I have a suspicion that the use of two gaskets actually allowed the idler gear to flop around TOO much and helped to cause to one-sided wear in the cover.

Appreciate yout time!

On your next pump take a sheet of 400 grit W&D sandpaper a piece of sheet glass (window pane) some water and about 15 min lap out the marks yourself. Think how many revolutions the pump has made and that is how the marks get there. The marks also lead to low oil pressure.

Pete,

Put it together with one gasket and a piece of plastigage. You should have between 0.0035" and 0.006" end clearence. I had a little over 0.003 with one gasket and let it be.
