Hey Fellows I need an easy to read wire diagram for a H Farmall. Our FFA Boys need to rewire their project and half the wires are missing.

We have a 12v generator with a bolt on voltage regulator. it also has a distibuter. not sure on light switch. Those wires are intact so I can follow them . Thanks Jerry

Note: If your voltage regulator has only 3 terminals don't be concerned. Simply piggyback the orphaned "L" terminal wire onto the "BAT" terminal at the regulator.

hmm, so there is no need for the 4th position then, or even the third?

Were 3 position switches available in 1944, or just 4?

Mike,

I believe 1944 would have had a cutout relay and not a regulator (somewhere in this mess I have a manual). In that case, the 3rd & 4th positions on the switch controlled the charging rate by grounding the field wire either directly (high charge) or through a resistor (low charge). Charge rate is held at high whenever the lights are on.

An electromechanical voltage regulator does essentially the same thing except that high/low is controlled by a relay that opens & closes based on the output voltage instead of a manual switch. In a 3 relay regulator, one relay is the cutout, one controls voltage by switching a resistor in & out of the field line, and the third is a current limiter which pulls open when generator output current reaches some maximum level.

The cutout relay simply served to disconnect the generator from the battery when the engine was not running in order to keep from discharging the battery, and had nothing to do with controlling charge rate.

With a voltage regulator the 4th position (either "L" or "H" - your choice) is redundant. Both simply serve as "off" positions on the light switch.

However IMHO that "third position" (lights off) remains a desirable feature(!)

The 3 position switch appeared when voltage regulators replaced cutout relays. Seems to me that happened around 1950 or 51. But I'm not certain of the exact year.

Bob, are you able to help out with custom diagrams? I am going to use a 12v generator with a VR, but I also was thinking I would like to use a 4 position switch (one of the new ones) and use the 4th position for having the rear light on.

So, basicially, bright, dim, fronts+rear and then... charge? I'm not sure. Is a charge position necessary anymore?

Magneto or distributor ignition? 3- or 4-position light switch? Cutout or voltage regulator?
