Super C: Symptoms of broken axle or other major problem

So I was dragging a stump across my property which was at the limit of the Super C's pulling capacity / traction and the wheels where slipping alternatively left and right. Eventually got where I needed to go but now when I push the left brake I hear an awful noise out of (or near) the right axle housing or right brake. I have read here that a broken axle is indicated by no movement until the break is pushed on the side with the broken axle but what I have is obviously different.

If I don't have the left brake on the tractor seems to run completely normally with no odd behavior or noise. When I press on the left brake though the right wheel is obviously the drive wheel and makes the noise. The axle does turn though and it is hard to tell but I think it is turning at the normal rate.

In my head I was wondering if the axle is broken but that the way it is broken it will still drive the wheels (perhaps through the jagget ends of the broken axle?).

At this point am looking for advise on what other tests / actions I can take to diagnose the problem before tearing things appart. Then if there is a priority order in taking things apart.

I believe Super C is a 1952 model (based on serial number of 179411).

Any suggestions?

As to whether or not to remove the platform---I'd take the extra time to lift it & see if anything else is going on. Like Gordo says--foreign objects don't take long to really mess up things in the tranny. The axle pull will need to have the bull gear off to get the axle out.

Two follow on questions then...

1) If it is the inner axle bearing is that something that can be changed by simply removing the axle housing (I do have a repair manual but don't have it handy at the moment) and working from there or does one need to remove the cover and work from the inside?

2) If it can be replaced without removing the cover will I have to remove the cover anyway to inspect / remove parts from inside the transmission anyway or is there another option?

Thanks in advance.
Lance

p.s. I don't post very often here but have gotten a lot of great information by monitoring the traffic and using the search function when dealing with my Super A, Super C, and 350. You guys are all great. Thanks all.

Broken inner axle bearing. Bet 100 to one there are pieces of it in the bottom of the tranny. When you get one of those ball bearing in the bull gear or somewhere else you will put a hole in the case. Jack the left side and yank the tire back and forth at the top and on the side. Also when driving it, and applying the left brake you will probably feel some jerking, or hear weird noise?

When jacking the tractor up, take note if there is much vertical travel of the axle. Could be the inside axle bearing is bad.

If you don't find anything too alarming, then run the tractor without using that brake as much as possible.
its hard for me to understand how anyone could give advice like this i would very very slowly get that tractor where i could work on it. ask me why i spent almost $500.00 fixing a h transmission

As with 99.9% of these tractor problems, "Take it apart, see what's wrong, and fix it," is the order of the day.

At least from your description, it does NOT sound like a broken axle, at least. A broken axle would leave you unable to drive the tractor at all.
Contrary to the other reply, I would NOT recommend continuing to use the tractor until you can determine what's wrong. What may be an inexpensive easy fix now could turn into a nightmare later.

I would start by jacking up the right side and turning the wheel by hand, listening for noise. If the wheel is hard to turn or does not turn smoothly, it could be a spider gear in the differential. Could also be an axle bearing or associated with the brake and brake pinion shaft. I would also do the same for the left side to be sure. Then I would start by disassembling the brake which is the easiest.

The tractor would not pull at all with a broken axle and the wheel should turn twice as fast if the left wheel is stopped by applying the brake.

Unfortunately, if the brake pinion or spider gears are involved, the top cover (and a bunch more)will have to come off to get to the problem. The old Laugh-In joke about when the Dr. ask "Does it hurt to do that?" and the reply of the patient is "Yes", then the Dr. replys "Then don't do that" is applicable here. I would drain the transmission oil, pull the pto and look for metal pieces. If you don't find anything too alarming, then run the tractor without using that brake as much as possible.
