Farmall M Brakes... big job or not?

Approximately how long and how big a job is it to put new brakes on an M Farmall? My right one will bring you to a quiet stop if you put all your weight on the pedal, and the left one will stop you instantly is you have enough nerve in you to bear the god awful sound... I'd say lefty there is down to nothing left and the right one probably is at the end of it's useful life. How much to brakes run on these things anyhow? Never put brakes on an older machine.. Thanks all.

Band brake tips-H & M
Remove the pins holding the brake adjuster to the pedal & actuating lever. Loosen & lube them.
Remove the cap screws holding the brake cover; wiggle it & they should come off.
Note or draw a diagram of how the brake band is attached to the cam. Turn the cover over, shake, tap or whatever to get the 2 pins out. If you remove the outer lever & half-moon key the whole thing comes out.
Replace the band & be sure the brake cam pivot shaft works freely in the cover. Oil or grease the pivot the area well and let the excess drip off before installing the new bands. Remove the brake drum; do not try to remove the bolted-on housing containing the seal. The bull gear inside the transmission has to be removed first to get the housing off. Using punches, chisels, etc. collapse the old seal inward, if original; it is difficult but will succumb to persistent efforts. Replace with 2 seals per side and place some chassis grease in-between them to protect the outer one from drying out. Polish the sealing surface on the brake drum and re-assemble.
Place a small amount of grease in the hole where the brake pivot goes into the transmission housing. After installing the bands & getting the pedal free-play to about 1", apply the brakes firmly, lock them in place and adjust the setscrew on the bottom side of the cover. (helps to loosen any adjustable parts BEFORE re-assembly) Loosen the jam nut, turn the set screw in until it touches the brake band, back out 1/2 turn & lock the jam nut. This helps prevent the brake band from dragging, premature wear, and overheating.

Thanks for taking the time to write a very informative set of instructions. I have needed to do the brakes on my 47 H, and now feel that I have enough info to do the job correctly the first time.

what are you talking about drawbar..my h is easyenough i didnt have to tkae the draw bar off.. dont buy bands off this site or any other site..have them re lined the material is completly diffrent and when you buy them from the internet they have the type of material that squeeks really bad

The M is a different tractor than the H, by a long run. Ask Allen in Neb. Get brake bands from Rusty Farmall and they will fit. rustyfarmall.com Jack

More clearance between the H drawbar and brake housing than an M. I've done both. I will say that it's possible to leave the drawbar in place and remove the cover. Takes quite a bit more finessing. I believe I undid the center bolt for the drum and pulled the cover and drum off at the same time.

Guess I need to state that it's a 41 model... sone of them come with bands and others with discs if I understand correctly.. I have no clue what's under there yet.

If all your bnolts are loose on the drawbar it is a vry simple job. First, disconnect the long return springs, then the adjustment spring. Remove the brake actuating lever and remove the woodward key from the shaft. NOW, remove the top drawbar nut and loosen the bottom one to make room for pan removal Now take a 9/16 socket ant remove the pan around the brake which will slide off of the brake shaft. Clean out the area, replace the brake pads abd reinstall in reverse. Not a bad job if you can get the drawbar loose easy. I had to cut one drawbar nut off and ended up replacing the whole 8" by 7/16 bolt because it was rusted almost thru. Henry Could take as little as an hour per side.
