I am doing an in-frame overhaul on my 1948 Cub and I have a few questions. To remove the oil pressure relief valve to test the spring is it simply a job of removing the plug and taking out the spring and testing it or is it much more involved? My shop manual is not very clear on this. Also If the head bolts are tightened to specs with the new head gasket do they have to be retightened after engine has been warmed up? There is not much clearance for this. I have had the valves and seats resurfaced and installed all new valve springs. Should I set the valve clearance at .013 or set them with a little more clearance to wear in? Is champion spark plugs heat range D18 or D21 preferred? I use it with a 60 inch belly mower for 4 or 5 hours at a time.

The others answered the other questions, now for the oil pressure relief. Remove the cap plug, pull the spring out, then reach in with a small magnet and retieve the plunger. You'll have to fish around to get the plunger out. Sometimes heavy grease on the end of a screwdriver. It always comes out a little then hangs up. Be patient, you'll get it.

Head bolts will need to be re torqued, set valves at .015, D-18 will be fine for a working Cub.
