I was able to pick up a 9 speed M this afternoon and have some questions for those out there more knowledgeable than I... I know M&W made both lever and cable actuated versions and this particular model is the cable engaged. At some point the cable had broke off in the bellhousing and the previous owner had rigged up a lever style out the top where the belt pulley drive once was. My question is what do you think I should do? try to get a new cable or convert it to the lever out the side of the case style??

Thanks in advance.

wow you guys are awesome!!

Ya, the remanants of my cable are there, with the fitting threaded into the bolt. Where do you mount it on the tractor? on the headlight tree?

I finally found a replacement cable that worked, Where the cable enters the trans housing on M&W it goes through the top left mounting bolt, This bolt is tapt to accept the spiral winding on the outside of the cable and there is a compression ftg with the same thread on the inside as the outside of the cable. The head of the mounting bolt is tapt shallow allowing the ftg to serve as a lock as well as a seal, I finally found a generic truck pto cable at Napa that is the correct cable. The cable comes with a coating that needs to be pealed off where it goes in the bolt. I think it was about 45 bucks, I do remember I had to buy it prior to pealing off the end to measure it but lucky it was the right OD and thread.

Kind of depends on what works for your situation and how it was set up originally. If you go to a cable make sure the wire in the cable is fairly stiff and it will work fine. I had mine made at a speedometer shop. When shifting, stop and take the tractor out of gear, feather the clutch slightly and you can push or pull the cable and feel it go in or out of the 9-speed vs. mashing it down or pulling hard on it.
