i have a 1934 farmall F-20. while disassembling it for cleaning and restoration i discovered that the brass tag on the engine block matches the serial tag on the tractor. i cant remember for sure what model or models of farmall tractor or years of production that these tractors had matching tags but i thought that throughout the production years the engine tags and tractor serial tags no longer matched. is the matching tags common or somewhat rare? thanks.

The engine and chassis serial #s usually matched on the F-20.
An F-20 wouldn't normally have a brass (or any other material) tag on the engine. Normally the #s are stamped right on a boss on the block.
Does the # on the brass tag start with a "Q" by chance? The only F-series I have seen with a brass tag on the engine was a Waukesha F-12.
If the # starts with a Q, you may have an experimental machine of some sort.

Though not a rule, up until about the early 40s The numbers matched. As production was moved to differing assembly lines, and models using the same engine were introduced, there was good reason to let the two drift apart. JimN

The tag number should match the number stamped on the frame. Sometimes the engine number matches too but not always. If it is close it is probably the original engine.
