Rebuilding the engine on a 1944 H model. SN-179201. My cylinder head casting# is 8776. The valve kit that was sent to my from Valu-Built, has springs guides and valves that are too long (Intake and ex. valves are 5.335" or 5 23/64") My valves measure Int. 5.060 (5 1/16")Ex. 5.080 (5 5/64}My service manual shows this length to be for a combination gasoline-distilate cyl. head. My int/ex manifold looks like a combination gas/distilate manifold, though there is no auxiliary tank for the "start up Gasoline" Can anyone confirm this? Can anyone give me a source for the proper guides, valves and springs? Also can the longer guides be used with the shorter valves? ( the machine shop has already installed the longer guides before they realized that the valves and springs were too long.) Thanks for any help I can get.- Jon

They are still available from the dealer, $36.00 a valve. Just bought an exhaust valve from Napa, Sealed Power part no 211-1019, $13.86. Intakes are available but I don't know the part number. They were not listed in the new book, so hopefully your Napa kept the old book. Might be able to get you springs and guides, don't hurt to ask. Hope this helps.

Hello Jon.
your head is a distilate from your casting # witch should have 5.05 valves the guides should be 2.62 the guides that are installed in your head now are 2.94 your machine shop could cut them down. the only difference in the springs are whether you have rotators or not. you can look up the parts at my web site and order what you need from me if you like.
Thanks Ed

The #8776 head IS the distillate/gasoline head, thus the parts you got should be correct, BUT, I have encountered this problem before when I was trying to figure which kit a customer needed. I came to the conclusion that IH built their engines with several different valve lengths, and the rebuild kits available offer only one or two choices on the valve length. I know this doesn't help you any, but my advice is to buy just the sleeves, pistons, and gaskets, and let the machine shop take care of the head and valves, and let the machine shop get the bearings also.

Heads get changed over the years so nothing means anything. If it were me I'd hunt for a gas head to match your long valves and guides. I don't suppose they will want to return them since they have been installed.
