Pressure is good!

I replaced the ferrule. Couldn't find a compression nut that matched, so I used the one I had, as it didn't look bad at all. I tightened the whole assembly up and took the tractor out for spin with my kids. Pressue worked immediately, but changed as the engine rpm changed. I'm assuming that is correct.

The engine seems to have a few... bobbles, in it. Meaning, as it's running it seems like there are pops that randomly come out. But it's running, and I'm sure some experts will be at the show next weekend and will be able to listen to it and guide me on tuning it in.

Thanks for all the help with the pressure gauge and line!

No, the pulley wasn't in very good shape, so I sold it for restoration money.

A lot of tractor shows have a dyno. avaible that you can hook your tractor to and run it under load. Sometimes it is just a big fan. Do you still have your belt pulley on the tractor as you might need this to belt it to the fan? As it is running under load than you can make carb. and dist. adjustments. Armand

I plan on taking the tractor to the show sometime Friday. Probably in the afternoon, but it depends on my friend's schedule. I should also be there all day Saturday and Sunday. Again, depending on his schedule, since I'm trailering with him.

Brandon, are you coming down for the Tulare show?

No, I didn't do an actual one. We did a "farmerized" one back in November. My friend stuck his finger in the spark plug hole and I gave it a hand crank. It pushed on his finger, so we called it "good" for the rings being somewhat tight... enough to give the engine a try.

Now that it's running I suppose I could do an actual test. I'll ask him if he has a gauge and we'll go from there, and I'll post the results when complete.

I don't remember you posting how to do a compression check. Have you done one? Do you have access to a gauge? I know guys, opening another Pandora's box here, but I don't think we have a choice here. We'll tune this beast from afar.

Ok, I just got back. I may not have a lot of time before the police get here. I tried your car test, Jim. However there are no hills close to here, but I don't think it mattered. I got 4 hooked up and it started to strain. The 5th one almost made it die, then I realized that their parking brakes were still engaged, and that is why it was having trouble. (no one was home to ask to borrow their cars, but I really wanted to try this test!!) So, I unhooked and left the cars down the street and brought the H home and put it away.

The point made about the engine working better under load was proven. Although if the police figure out where I live, they may not be as happy with that explanation as I am.

Next time you do the "test", hook up 3 mufflers to make it real quiet and do it at 4 in the morning. The fan will be loud, but maybe the neigbors will call it in as a Red Tornado! Cops will "cut a trail" out of there if they hear it coming! :) What day are you going to the show, I may be there thurs night or fri and can give it a listen.

Well, at least it didn't catch fire on this test. ;8^)

If you mean an irregular miss or sputter, turn your distributer in and out while the engine is running and set it at the maximum rpm (sweet spot). Not saying it isn't some other problem, but it worked on my Super H. Have you adjusted your carburetor at full throttle -- same symptoms. My dad's H was run at all speeds with all kinds of loads, full load plow vs light load cultivation. Been 50 years but I do not remember speed or load affecting the smoothness of the engine. Can't say that my little used Super H or M shows differences either. I will agree with Jim that an occasional miss is normal. Every few seconds is not.

I am very glad the pressure is good. It does vary with speed. You will find that the Farmall will make modest misfires during operation. Most of this is due to the fact that you are not using it as designed. It is supposed to be operating near full throttle, and near full load. (happy moments in fact, but not very common in a suburban setting). Towing 25 cars chained together up a modest hill is about right, but neighbors dissapprove of it. JimN

Outstanding!

As far as the pressure reading . . . It will read lower at idle than at running speeds. Not sure how the Hs are, but the pressure comes up fairly quickly above idle on the 113 like in my BN or the 123 in my SuperC, to a running pressur that it holds no matter how much faster it runs above that point. It's only a very arrow range that you can see it change with the engine speed.

All the same, good work! Enjoy.

sounds like a push tube if it is always at the same given time I had a couple tractors that did that

ocasional pop is gonna be a bent pushtube inside the rocker box cover, seen it lots of times on the c152 motors... I had to put a bigger set on my sons tractor he kept bending tubes. Gonna be interesting to see how they do this year and how the performance is with zero push tube deflection now
