I'm replacing the pto seals on my '54 Super A. The seal on the pulley drive is behind a plate. Not a problem. On the PTO shaft( the one that points straight back), I think I'm seeing the seal on the outside of the housing. Do I need to pull the housing and get this out with a seal puller, or can I drive a screwdriver or something into it and work it off? Is that the seal that I'm seeing or a casting with the seal behind it?

Help!!

I just did mine last week. Take a screwdriver and tap and pry on that cup and it will eventually come out.

Thank you, Shaggy. I'm headed back out there now to do just that.
Appreciate it!

That is the seal you are looking at. If it the orignal one it is a thick one and they can be a little tough to get out. I used a screw driver and a small crows foot pry bar to get mine out. The new one is skimpy compared to the old one but they work.

OK, I've got everything that looks like a seal out. There's still something that looks like a cup in there. Is that part of the old seal? I can't tell if it's supposed to stay there or not. I can't get the new seal in with it there. Maybe I just answered my own question.
I needed to come in for another beer and wash the busted knuckle. Such fun!

What you see in there is part of the old seal and will have to come out. I gave some instructions on a post farther down about how to take the PTO shaft out if you find that necessary. To get the PTO shaft out, the PTO unit has to come off the tractor.

Haas- Thanks for the reply. I got everything out OK, and got th4e new seal into the pully attachment without trouble. When I went to put the seal into the PTO, I warped the seal. Had to order another one at the local parts store. Picked it up today and tried to put it in after work. It wouldn't go. Tried tapping it in with a piece of pipe that matched the diameter of the seal. Would you believe I ruined this one? I sanded around the hole with emery cloth to remove any burrs from getting the old seal out. I put on a thin coating of grease to smoothe things out. My buddy was here while I was working on it. He tried to tell me the seal was too big. Guess he was right. I'm headed down to the parts store tomorrow to have a talk with the clerk that sold me these seals. When I orded them, he spent a very long time staring at the catalog and shaking his head, He suddenly decided that this was the seal I needed. Now I'm not so sure.
