i have a 1947 Farmall H s/n fbh 249906x3,i was told that all W4 engines and H engines were the same and that all the parts are interchangable. is this true,
someone ells told me that at some point the latter tractor engines were increased in sizes . i am a little confused

I would say most everything is the same, as long as the years are close. Yes, the engines got bigger in later years, but that was in the early 50's when IH was switching to the Super series tractors. Some H's got a Super sized motor right before the actual Supers came out.
If you've got a '47 H and you get parts from a W4 from the '40s, I would say you'd be fairly safe for most parts. It's best to double check the part number first.

Thanks for the info. Everytime i look at a super h, I compare the serial tag and engine number and all of them ive seen have an engine number always later than the serial tag unless it was switched out at some point. Now I see why that is.

Almost ever part on those tractor engines was changed a little from 1939 until 1953, but not enough to keep almost all parts from interchanging if the corresponding parts are used also. Front engine covers and late crankshafts with bigger diameter bearing jounals are a couple of things to watch for.
