Oil is leaking from around the PTO shaft. I assume there is a seal that goes around the shaft and it's gone bad. Question- how do I remove the shaft to replace the seal? Thanks a lot.

There's probably a couple of seals in there. Keep pulling them out untill you can see the bearing. I replaced all these with one thin seal and works fine. David.third party image

Should have said these are out of a 240. $4.99 Harbor Freghit Tool seal puller (on sale). David.

Are you sure you have to remove the shaft to replace the seal? I don't think so.... Drill a couple of holes in the old seal and screw in a couple of wood screws. Carefully pry out the seal using the wood screw heads as a means of gripping the seal. mike

I've never had much luck getting those old thick seals out although some say it can be done. I had mine apart for other reasons though and just took the shaft out.

It's been a while. I hope I'm telling you correct. To remove the PTO shaft, you have to take the PTO unit off the tractor. You will then see the gear mounted on the inside end of the PTO shaft that drives the shaft. As I recall, the shaft comes out to the outside, so you have to take the gear off first. Don't try to drive the shaft out after taking the gear retainer bolt out of the inside end of the shaft. The woodruff key that keys the gear to the shaft will catch on the bearing race and prevent the shaft from coming out. As I recall the gear is not a press fit on the shaft, so it's not difficult to get off, but a gear puller would be best. Once the shaft is out, the bearings and spacer should more or less just fall out. Then you can use something (I use a large socket of the correct diameter) to drive the old seal out.
