oil pressure transmission line

I'm replacing my oil gauge right now on my '44 H. As I took the assemble apart, it seemed really loose at the base where the fitting goes into the elbow into the engine. Also, the line that goes into the fitting that attaches to the gauge just slid right out. Oil didn't seem to leak from it, although I didn't give it a good look at the base. But I did see it at the gauge. And oil came out of the line when we popped it off with the engine running, so I know it's flowing.

Is the line just supposed to be loose in the fittings like that, or is there a way to tighten them? My service manual and operators manual don't cover that, so sorry for yet another question, but I want to make sure this is right as I put it back together.

If I were to pull the line at the engine block elbow in order to clean it up and tighten it, will oil shoot out all over the place? In other words, do I have to drain the oil first?

No. As long as the engine is not running at the tine, just the oil trapped in the line will drip out, plus, possibly a few drops out of the oil gallery in the block.

Mike:
I have a test oil pressure guage I keep in my tool box. It is a new guage with a hose from a grease gun threaded on it. I simply screw it in the block of the engine I'm not sure of and I have an accurate reading. Old guages and lines can do funny things.

If you have a guage from IH you will need an 1/8in coupling and a male compression ftg with a ferrule sized for your line, Early M's and H's came with an 1/8in OD line, the later have the small line. lot's of them have been altered so check your size. The line will be tight if you find the correct ftgs when your done

I've been really busy this week. We're remodeling, getting things ready for the baby. I'm building a crib right now... in fact, I better hurry back before the wife sees I've sneaked off. :?

Hi Mike, I was just reading the service manual for my 28 chevy truck and it said there was an air cushion supposed to be in the line going to the oil gauge. So it might be a good idea to get it all tightened up before starting instead of letting the air bleed out. I have seen some gauges read jumpy and I suppose that is because of no air in the oil gauge line. how is everything else going like the sheet metal and trans leak? I may be leaving Monday so if I get the truck picked up early enough I may be able to give you a hand before the show if you need one.

CNKS said: It's supposed to be tight, it was probably a little loose in order to align the line with the fitting. The fitting on the gauge is supposed to be tight also. The line will be loose as you loosen the fitting, the fitting will slide on the line. I don't remember if that line is flared or if it has a compression fitting.

hmmm, I may have a bigger problem then. The fitting comes completely off the line up at the gauge. I wonder if it broke?

I'll get some pictures and put them up a little bit later.
