My 606 utility is stuck in 5th. I have only had the tractor a few months and its hard to shift out of gear if the ta is up, but i thought it my just be the nature of it. What do I need to do? When I bought the tractor the clutch was out and I put a new clutch, plate, bearings and imput shaft in it. I also have a 1976 IH loadstar 1800 it has an electronic ignition. I think the electronic ignition module is bad, but the dealership said they can't get one and they don't make them anymore. Any ideas?

I also have a 606. Here's what you need to do first, take the shift lever off. Becareful as the lever is sring loaded and will push back against the bolts as you turn them out. Once you have this off. try to move the shifting forks (slotted rails) back and forth. The one on the left is 4th and 5th. If they move real easy the fork is broken. I fixed mine myself and "I aint no mechanic". But it took me a couple weekends to disassemble, diagnose and repair.

Last night the tractor was stuck in 5th gear. The shifter would move, but it stayed in 5th. So if you tried to go to another gear it would try to go into 2 gears. Well today I have 1-3 and reverse, but no 4/5 gears. Any ideas? My guess is a shifting fork broke. I did not consult a book when installing the clutch. Napa said the could get me a ignition module for $130.

rfh, if the tractor is hard to shift, the TA needs adjusting. There is a very specific procedure and if you don't follow it and keep everything within a certain tolerance, things don't work.

How's it stuck in 5th? Is the gearshift lever stuck? Will the tractor move?

have you tried a GOOD napa or similar parts supplier on your loadstar?
if you want i will try to find it at work, let me know if you want me to try. i might need to know which distributor and engine. you can email me if you want.

on the 606, the gearshift is between your legs, right? i bet it is susceptible to the same issues as the H M, and so on. you might try pulling the shift lever out and using a prybar to align your trans in neutral, and then inspect for wear on your shifter before reassembling. it might need to be built up and ground to fit. many posts on this for H and M in the archives. hard shifting could be partially caused by a worn lever or a lever missing its pivot pin. could be (more likely) other issues too.

If it has a TA. trypulling the T.A. lever back befor shifting. When you put the new clutch in did you adjust the clutch linkage and the T.A linkage according to the O.P. manual? These adjustments are very important and must be done by the instructions in the book!!!!! Armand

The truck can be changed back to points - that is what I did to my 78 loadstar 1600 392. Runs good now - always has been a pig on gasoline. My dads old 59 AC 160 with a 264 six banger is much more fuel efficient. Still runs like a top too.
