Should a 400 gas motor have a dip stick to check the oil level in the crank case?

I have a 400 that came out the first year they were made. Mine has to two petcocks on the side of the oil pan to check the oil. Is this factory?

Also what shold the casting number for a 400 block be and where would I find it?

Thanks

If you have a 54 model, original didn"t have a dipstick until into 1955. Most gasoline and LP engines didn"t have openings in pan for petcocks. Unless you have a diesel block casting numbers are located above oil filter on engine block. Casting # for original block is 356980 R1 or R2. R1 didn"t come with dip stick and R2 did. C281 engines in 450 tractors also used 356980 R2 blocks. Farmall tractor serial 10870 was the first one with dip stick and W 400 # 819.

Should have said most 400 gasoline and LP that came with dip stick didn't have petcock openings in pan. Kerosene and distallite with dipstick had openings with petcock in one and other pluged. IH and others sold dipsticks to install on previous blocks. IH also sold replacement blocks with dipstick opening and replacement oil pans with petcock openings.

Parts list is at www.caseih.com. Casting numbers are on the right side of the block. Also C 264 should be cast on the rear of the right side of the block, along with a date code in the form of 1*8*B--Jan 8 1956, etc. Somewhere in the 400-450 series IH added a dipstick. The petcocks are likely correct.
