I have a Farmall M that keeps blowing out the starter switch. Whats the probable cause? It started a handfull of times, and then died. Replaced the swith and the same thing happened again. I"m not an electrition by any means so any help would be great. Does the starter itself need some work? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Which type of switch do you have? There are at least 3 different set ups...

Push button switch up on the post with a heavy cable coming from the battery and another going to the starter.

Foot activated push button with heavy cables.

The pull rod type where the cable goes to the starter.

OK, what I have noticed on some of those is that the foot pivot is pushing on the switch CROOKED instead of STRAIGHT. A crooked push will cause the switch to fail prematurely...

Unhook the battery and push the switch and make sure that is pushing straight on the switch and not crooked/off kilter.

That's my $3 worth so you can buy a gallon of gas, LOL.

Thanks Steven f/AZ, I will take a look at that. I thought that it was a little harder to push than normal latley. Maybe something got a little off center. Thanks again for the help.

Dont know why other post thinks there is a button when the M has a threaded post. You have something wrong as those buttons should last for yrs.

Is it a starter mounted switch or a foot/ hand actuated switch back by the operator's platform? Make sure to use adequate pressure on the switch plunger when starting. Make sure you aren't twisting the heavy cable mounting studs when tightening the nuts on the switch--this would possibly turn the contacts inside the switch.

Sounds like your starter needs work!

Most likely the copper button on the starter is worn down and needs to be replaced. (A button that's too short causes excessive arcing each time you hit the starter - even with a new switch installed. The arcing in turn causes the contact bar in the switch to burn out very quickly....)

Any good automotive electrical shop can install a new contact button - last one I had done ran about $25 as I recall.

Thanks Bob. I guess I'll start there. I'll take that starter off and run her into town. Thanks again.
