I've used an infrared contact thermometer before. It gives you a general idea, but the boiling water idea sounds pretty darn good.

If it is on the tractor, run the tractor until it warms up and see if the gauge is working, if it is not on the tractor, boil some water and put the gauge lead into the hot water and see if the needle moves.

Remove it, put the sensor in a pan of hot water. The H and M warm up very slowly, particularly in cold weather. The gauge on mine might not move for 30 minutes or more.
