HI Everyone Hugh i talked to you when I brought this tractor home about ring gear being bad in one place. I wanted to split it and fix everything. I have not had 400.00 for all the parts. I took a 3 corner file and filed the teeth inthe bad spot then the rest of the way around the flywheel. I bought one of the new clutch type starter drives. So far so good. I guess the bad spot was not quite as bad as it looked. I probably spent over 4 hours filing though. I was getting tired of cranking so decided to give it a shot. Having to mow grass for the second time here in Florida

HI Hugh I read all the posts with your name on them. I have learned a lot from you. Tractor was 12 volt when I bought it. I have ordered the Hitachi Alternator so I can get the hood fastened down right. Hopefully then I will be done with that part for awhile. I have a 300U that I am changing to 12 volt. I think I will do the clutch drive on it also. You are right very smooth engagement

Hey Rob,
Since you have already ordered the Hitatchi alt, put it on the 300. You will have more underhood clearance than with a Delco. A Delco will work fine on the Super A since it is out in the open.

magman: I changed my tractors to clutch starter drives close to 15 years ago. I took both my Super A and 130 starters to an auto electric rebuilder that I had done business with for years. He rebuilt both starters and when they came back one starter would engage on either tractor and the other wouldn't engage on either tractor. Granted my ring gears were not in top shape.

I examined the starters and noticed the one that wouldn't work was a Bendix, however the other was something I'd never seen before. It looked very similar to a clutch drive on a chain saw. I called my rebuilder friend back, told him what was going on. He said, " Bring it back, I only had one starter drive in stock, and had to send over to the CaseIH dealer for the second one." I guess he misunderstood me on the phone, as he had a Bendix already to put in when I got there. I said,"That bendix is the junk, I want the other type starter drive". Of course I hadn't realized which drive came from CaseIH until I got there.

I drove to the CaseIH dealer, Al took my starter apart. I'm thinking that was about 93, and the CaseIH dealer partsman said they had been selling the clutch drive close to 20 years then.

These clutch drives are a very superior product to the old Bendix. They will work well on less than perfect ring gears. They engage so much smoother, great on all tractors but exceptionally great on 12 volt conversions. Those starter drives have been on there 15 years now, never had a starter lock up since. Very unusual, I've seen those old Bendix lock up on tractors less the 5 years old. My 130 works so well, I didn't bother to change the ring gear when I installed a new clutch assembly 5 years ago, and that tractor is the one I run all winter.

I think Tractorman is right, available only at CasIH.

Hugh,
Been so long since I converted mine that I don't remember when I did it. Haven't touched either starter since. 130 used to lock up frequently.

It it a clutch type starter drive available from CIH to replace the old Bendix type. Sorry do not know the CIH PN. Been so long since I changed my 130 and M both converted to 12 volts.

Rob: Your one up on me, I didn't spend 15 minutes with the file. I installed the starter with the clutch drive. I think it was 1992 and the tractor has been starting winter and summer ever since. I even split the tractor since to install a new clutch assembly, didn't bother changing the ring gear. I think it will last longer than just a little while. The clutch drive will engage much more smoothly, a big factor if you have or may be converting to 12 volt. Good to hear, you have it starting.

Is that clutch drive type always engaged to the
flywheel or does it back out like a Bendix. I've
never heard of it. but something like that might
work for a project I am working on.

Dave It backs out same as a bendix. Very unusual to have Farmall that never locks up starter to flywheel. Very smooth engage even on 12 volts.

That works ok, just ensure the leading edge is as clean as possible. That, and a new starter drive should last for a while. A rotary burr is an easier way to clean the ring gear tho, the file would have been hard work.
Cheers,
Rex
