Had my water pump apart while I had the radiator off.Put new thrust washer behind the impeller,also it did not have any packing behind the packing nut,but did'nt leak.I have a couple of rolls of grafite rope packingso I put about 1 1/2 wraps around the shaft.Done fine it set about a week.WhenI got everything back together An started it up ran it awhile,it started leaking around the shaft? Had to grind down a wrench to tighten the packing,but did'nt stop it. I'll pull radiator Monday.Need input? Thanks;

It takes anywhere from 18"-22" of rope to seal that pump up tight. Put it in about a round and a half at a time trying not to line up any rope ends. Good Luck

You say there wasnt any packing in there, are you sure? I dont see how it didnt leak without the packing. Ill bet the packing has just gotten hard.

you reckon that you need more in there? that grafite rope packing ought to seal it can you get in there to add some more without the rad removal

i think i would try that first if it were me

I have had the same problem, even with a new pump. I used the IH packing in various amounts with no success, and then switched to the rope. It still leaked, but after using the tractor several times it stopped. I have been told that the use of loctite on the packing nut will help. Mine worked loose. Run it a while and see what happens. This is a somewhat unusual problem as most people on this forum have had good luck with the IH packing. IH could have changed suppliers. As far as the wrench, a 7/8 inch stubby wrench works ok for tightening the nut in case it leaks. The springs, etc have to be removed otherwise. Also, you may need more than 1.5 wraps, I think 3 of the IH packings are about the minumum.
