the tractor was converted to 12 volt and it is set up so that the engine will not start while the starter is engaged. you have to let go of the key and then it will start if it has enough momentem. i think it is wired wrong somewhere. does anyone have a revised wiring diagram for conversion to 12 volt or any comments?

Magman is on target. Unless the ignition switch is bad, the problem is in the voltage drop. Put a volt meter on the coil terminal. if around 5 or 4 volts it won't start.
Put in a ford type srarter relay to replace the one in it . wire the I terminal to the coil Negative terminal (bypassing the ballast resistor. This gives 10 volts to start it. Works well. JimN

No you probly have it right My SM does the same thing the starter draws enough juice away from the points that this happens try a stronger bat or a rebuilt starter. JON

SORRY I had to leave quick, Or you may be able to clean the terminals make sure you have big enough cables and such. The main thing is the starter having enough juice to crank it over good and get power to the points at the same time. I put a new bat in the SM and it worked great for a while now its doing it again on me just giver her a crank and let off and she fires. I should probably take my own advise or put a Mag on. LOL JON
