about 25-30 years ago my grandfather broke and rewelded the piece where the tail wheel attatches and the 2 beams come together on my dad/uncle's plow. my dad and uncle say that (edited to summarize) "it does not pull as easy or plow as good as did before he broke it." they go on to tell of how he was plowing through the fences too...???
looking at pictures of other semi mount plows and old pull types, the tail wheel is on the right side of the tail arm. this one is on the left. (as viewed from rear/sitting in tractor seat looking forward)

does not seem correct to me. did it get put on wrong when the repair was made? there is a lot of slop too in the steering linkage. it also needs new shares and other wear parts.

thanks

ps as original owners the book should be around, but i hate to ask until after tax season

i believe the broken and rewelded part is #541124R1
according to the cih web site. AP-22 item 11

i don't think it being damaged could put the alignment too out of whack but i'm not sure.

i also think the rear wheels are all set in too far on all the tractors...

Karl: My book shows the same part number. Even though that part has been welded, if welded wrong it wouldn't bolt up to plow.

Is there adjustment in the steering linkage to rear wheel. I do remember having to play with that steering linkage on my new semi mount to get it to plow right and pull easy. I didn't do it myself, but the operator told me he just followed the instruction in manual.

I can tell you tractor wheel tread setting is quite important with those semi-mounted plows. I think you'd have to be looking at close to 68" to 72" for 3x18 plow.

the book for the bigger 4,5,6 bottom IHs that i got as a package deal for something else on ebay says 30-32 inch space between pto shaft (or middle point) and the inside edge of the rear wheel. not sure if it's identical to a 3 bottom...

the ford 5000 is at 60" on centers (bought at auction that way25 yrs ago) and the 656 has the right pushed in to about 64" while the left is out almost all the way. it was pushed in "for the mower" which was sold in the mid 70s for the 230 swather. it is now used on the discbine which i think would allow room for the wheel to be set out to plow. the 1256 is too big... but that one isnt set up right either, needs to be all the way in for duals...

when i started reading the books it seems that every piece of equipment required to put in a crop requires a different tread spacing at each step. then summer time activities require another wheel tread setting. every tractor we have has either short axles or the goofy 8 position hoop rim system.

If he was abusing it such that the tail wheel got broken, who knows what other damage may have been done to that plow at the same time?

Karl: I have a parts book for that plow. If you could get tail wheel part numbers, I could check that much out for you.
