I put on my sheet metal, none of it fits

This afternoon I tried to put on my grill. The spout of the radiator sits higher than I have seen in pictures of well restored H's. That was the first problem. Next, I could only get 3 of the bolts to engage. The forth won't line up. Add to this, the grill is sitting up a little high off the grove for it on the front of the bolster. So I tightened down the 3 bolts and went for the hood. There is a big gap between the hood and the grill on the left side, but not as bad on the right. I can only get 3 of the hooks to engage.

So, it looks like my tractor is twisted?
I had the radiator off. I changed the pads, buying new "correct" pads. And I replaced the fuel tank. Now after all this, nothing fits.
I don't even know where to begin to try to fix this. :?

I had the same problem until I realized the bolts were all fine thread that held the grill to the radiator ? My 2 cents.

I have found the best way to make your hood fit is to elongate the 3 holes that the gas tank bolts to. That way you will have enough movement to line things up.

I dont think I would go through the trouble of taking the frame and emgime mounts or the front bolster loose, since you didnt before. Just loosed up the fuel tank and radiator, put your sheetmetal on and line everything back up then tighten down the rad and tank. Dont be surprised if your grill doesnt sit right at the bottom edge. Could have not been "right" for years before it was park and some wearing caused by rubbing could have occurred. As for as the "correct" pads, you can always shave those down with a sander to make it fit better as well.

The morning of the 19th, as soon as the IHC meeting is done. I'll let you know when I have more details.

As far as tent area... I'm not sure.
Here is the website for the show: >Link

mike, did you have the front bolster off? there is some wiggle room where the bolster bolts to the front frame rails. as the other gys stated, there is also wiggle room where the radiator bolts to the bolster, and the fuel tank. there should also be a support rod across the top of the motor going to the radiator. if you are looking for perfect gaps, take the weight off the front end by blocking it under the clutch housing, loosen the bolts that hold the rails to the bolster, also the motor mount bolts that hold the rails to the engine, and back the rear bolts out a few turns that hold the rails to the clutch housing. do a lil wigglin to get the bolster to move, then start fitting your sheet metal, once you get the bolster close, then snug it down and fit the rest.

Since you already noted where the gaps are, start looking to see if things are even. Measure from the radiator back to some point like an axle housing and see what you come up with. If the rad is out, then reset it as close to even as you can and then loosen the gas tank and set the hood on and line the hood up with the rad checking the gauge hole and grease zerk to make sure they are in line. Then work on the tank to get it in place. It takes time, but unless there was some bad damage before (and it didn"t look like it when you started) it should all go back in place. One thing out of whack like the rad will mess up the whole works! Remeber there are adjustments and or shimming to make front to back, side to side and up and down. One thing to check is the gas tank mounting. First time I had my tank unhooked to work on the rear end I put the mounts together wrong and the hood was way out of wack. (I had the springs on top of the mounts) As for the Tulare show, the guy I am getting the truck from says I can load it on the 18th or on the 20th so I may shoot for the 18th. When is your presentation going to happen? and is there a place to pitch a tent at the show grounds?

Hi Mike, sometimes just walk away when things don't work out the on the first or second try.
This is quite common for these items to not fit on the first attempt to re assemble. Take your time and don't break anything, everything needs to be re adjusted at this time. Cheers, Murray

Be sure the bolts on the side don't puncture your radiator.

Mike loosen the bolts on the gastank and radiator they will move around some you should be able to get them lined up you may have to loosen the radiator hoses too. As for the grill they are tight fitting loosen the three bolts some and try again you might need an extra hand.

Sorry, I haven't been following your posts. Did it fit before you started the project, or is this stuff you picked up along the way? Not much of anything seems to fit right the first time at 1100 PM after a long day. Being anxious to see the finished product doesn't help much either. If I run into a situation like that, I walk away, do something (sometimes nothing) else, and take a fresh look. When you do get things in place, just start the bolts, you can tighten and tweak after ALL are started.

Good Luck and don't be too hard on yourself.

Dave
