What could cause no oil pressure?

My '44 H seems like it's running fine. But it's got no oil pressure on the gauge. Oil is getting to the gauge, but there is no movement once hooked up.
Is there a way to test an oil gauge, or give it a swift kick to the butt?

Could be bad cam bearings. We ran into this on an H one time.

These engines will survive on as little as 7PSI of oil pressure.

You also don't need a special "Farmall H" oil pressure gauge. I put all new gauges on my Super H for $9.99. Got them at Harbor Freight on sale, normally $14.99.

As long as you ran it, I dought there anything wrong with the engine, probably just a bad gauge, unless the OP was so low it didnt regiater and even then, I think youd have locked up the engine.

Just take the blow gun on your air compresser and blow in the back it should move the needle just a couple blasts should tell. Mite be surprised what a new guage will do.

If it hadn't had enough oil pressure,it would have seized on your ''little jaunt''

Hey, Mike in reply to Mike CA, 04-05-2008 14:57:02
Shoot me an email with your addy.

I've got a brand new oil gauge with the studs on the back that was sent to me in error if you want it. It's not technically correct in that it has the IH man-on-tractor logo that came in in '47, instead of the IHC.

If you want it it's yours. Lemme know.

Sent!

Thanks! I know the pressure is there, cause oil streams out. So it must be the gauge.

Just had the same problem with a 140--I replaced the guage--Now, I have good oil pressure--Hope I learned something through this---Glynn

Disconnect the line from the gage. Crank the tractor with the switch off so it doesn't start. Oil should shoot out of the line. If it does replace the gage. If no oil, proceed to step 2. 2) Remove the line and use one of those rubber tipped blowguns to check the line, to see if it's plugged. If it's plugged, clean it , reinstall and check pressure. IF it's clear go to step 3. 3. Crank engine with oil pressure line off engine. Oil should shoot out of the port. If it does now you KNOW it is the gage. If it doesn't
we're in deep doo doo. Just common sense working upstream to find the source of the pressure problem.

You can test the gage with air pressure. If you have a compressor that has a regulator, set the regulator to 40 psi and get some fittings to adapt to the gage (1/4 inch pipe threads??) and screw on the gage and then turn the regulated air supply on.

Believe the gauge until you can prove it is faulty. Dont run the engine until this is resolved.

Mike. Hugh on this forum, said something really wise once, and I think it applies here even though he was at the time talking about hydraulic pumps. He said, how long will your heart last without blood? That's how long your engine will last without oil. Do you really want to risk it?

If not, I would take the gauge, the tube line, and the sender unit if there is one, off and inspect every part. If the line and sender check out (clean them thouroughly and blow out the line) then replace the gauge before you even start it up again. The risk is too great. Your oil pump MAY be fine, but what if it isn't? Don't seize that engine up when you are so close.

Dave: Your exactly right, in both hydraulics and engine, oil lubricates the system. Without it they fry in a matter of minutes.

In an earlier post you said you removed the tubing from the back of the oil pressure gauge and had pressure in the line to the gauge. Was it a good stream or just a trickle? (There could be a blockage in the tubing from the engine to the gauge). This indicates you have at least some engine oil pressure. Try removing the gauge from the housing and carefully using a straightened out paper clip, try to dislodge any sluge or plug from the small center opening in the stem of the gauge. Could be just a spot of old dryed out dirty oil/dust/dirt that has taken up residence in the gauge port. If this doesn't work, then I'd recommend a new/different gauge. As long as you know the pump is pushing oil from the gauge end of the tubing, you can probably drive the tractor safely.

I'd spend $20 for a new gauge.

Mike,

Put a little air pressure against that guage and see if it moves.

If it does, I'd be really careful with the tractor; it just might not have any oil pressure.

Allan
