I have run across a 274. I am new to the Red, and was wondering if the 274 diesel was a dependable tractor?

Were a couple around here, know of one still going. Not aware of any problems with it, but it basically just did row crop work on a veggie farm. Basically IH's second last offset (265 mitsu based tractor replaced it)

I saw a 284 with MFWD sell at auction today. Paint poor, tractor about 8 out of 10, only marking 1150 hours (not much for 25 years). It sold for $7750, I couldn't believe it, it passed my price so quickly I didn't even get a bid, and I drove 400 miles today with the trailer. Also a 3288 for $7000 and a 966 with FEL for $4750.

Kubota made a diesel offset comparable to a 140 or 274. I think Ford had one too, a 1710 maybe?

Jim: Add John Deere and Oliver to that list.

I think the kubota was a 245. I have seen a few around here over the years, more of them than the others mentioned other than Farmalls or Internationals.

darren: I wouldn't touch it, they don't hold a candle to the older offsets. I have two friends who bought 274s new for their commercial vegetable operations. Today there are no 274s left, they are using SA and 130.

Biggest problem they had with 274s was failed engines and it took 6 months to get parts. All this happened before the tractors were 5 years old.

MJ: The 274 was a 3 cylinder Japaneese built tractor that IH used to replace the 140
