Timing marks on 46 B

My manual says that the timing marks should be visible trough the "hand hole" in the fly wheel housing. I can't find them. I have had the distributer off and need to re-time. Can you tell me exactly where to look and what I may need to clean to see them?

The others are correct. If you can't find the mark -- I promise you it is there -- Put # 1 at TDC, point the rotor on the mag to # 1 on the distributer cap, install the mag and rotate the top (coil) against the block, remove the coil wire and hold it 1/4 inch from the grounding nut on the mag body (switch pulled out), rotate the mag clockwise from the rear until it trips. You can do final timing by ear if needed. If it has a distributer the procedure is the same, except you rotate it clockwise until you get a spark from the coil wire.

You need to remove No1 sparkplug near the radiator and bring No1 piston to TDC on the compression stroke. You will need a helper while one slowly cranks while the other holds his thumb over the plug hole to feel when compression is felt against his thumb. Then drop a LARGE handle screwdriver on top of the piston and watch that screwdriver rise as the engine is slowly cranked.
When it quits rising your piston should be at TDC.
Both valves on No1 piston should be closed. Your timing mark should be visible through that hole. It may be rusty too and hard to see. You should now be able to install the distributor by turning the rotor so it point's to the No1 plug tower on your cap. This should be in the 2 o'clock position as you view the cap. The timing mark is on the smooth part of the flywheel. It's not a very deep mark, and hard to see and the flywheel often has oil and grease on it, obscuring the mark. Get No. 1 cylinder as close as you can to TDC of the compression stroke by taking the plug out and rotating the engine until you feel air coming out the plug hole, then feel though the plug hole with a wire to get the piston at the top. The mark should then be somewhere near the bottom. Then clean that area very well with some solvent to get the flywheel clean and you should be able to locate the mark. Use a good light so you can see better. The mark on the clutch housing that you align the flywheel does not amount to much, just a "bump" in the cast metal. It's at the very bottom, so the flywheel mark is at the very bottom when the piston is at TDC.
