Does anyone make a quick release clamp for mufflers? Right now my muffler has no clamp. I need to take the muffler off to fit my H in my garage. I'd like a quick release so I can put it on and take it off easily.
Will the motor blow the muffler off if it's just sitting there with no clamp?

Either Nelson or Stanley used to make a break away exhaust extension, used them as straight pipes, when you went onto a low clearance area you just folded them back.

How about a stainless steel bolt and nut for the clamp and a strap-on ventilated handle (like a big version of radiator hose clamp and a shed door handle) on the muffler?

Mike, I don't have any muffler clamp at all on any of my tractors and that includes the two that actually work for a living. I've never had a muffler fall off.

Good to know. I guess I'll go without for now.

if your talking about only a few inches then why not just cut the muffler down?your garage door cant be that low.

I don"t have the clearance problem , but last year when I worked on my H I had the hood off what seemed like every 5 minutes and of course that ment pulling off the muffler each time. I used good thick welding gloves which are pretty cheap and didn"t over tighten the clamp. It also helps to let it sit for a few min or the gloves will smoke and leave a hand print mark on the muffler! There may be a slot in the pipe of the muffler for clamping or may not be one. I would say you might be able to cut a slot in with a hacksaw so it will come off easier and still tighten up. Large wing nuts on the clamp might also help if you can even find them that size. I don"t set my muffler all the way down as it gets me just enough highth to keep the exhaust out of my face. I set it about 1.5 inches down the pipe.

Dad had a loader on his H and it wouldn't go in one hoghouse with the muffler on. He just loosened the clamp and we pulled it off and put a 1 gallon paint can on it so we didn't blow sparks up into the straw insulation over woven wire ceiling. We never retightened the clamp when we put the muffler back on and it rode down on the hood and wallowed out the hole in the hood and burned the paint off. Not pretty. My neighbor has a Massey utility where the muffler is horizontal above the hood after a quarter turn pipe. It then has another turn up or sideways, I can't remember out of the muffler. It is out of the way, but the exhaust in your face stinks. A friend was going to put a 180 degree pipe on his H and blow the exhaust down, but sold the tractor before he did it.

I have the same problem - both my storage shed and house garage overhead doors are low but the steering wheel on the H will clear. I considered removing the muffler but that will be a pain (let it cool off OR have gloves on hand then you have to find a safe place for a hot muffler, I would also be afraid of sparks, etc) not to mention the noise. I considered designing a large "knuckle" or flex joint but that would be overboard and probably wouldn't look to nice. Then it came to me. Some of the bigger, newer IH's came with straight pipe or so I thought. Actually the muffler is under the hood and that is what I am designing. A simple resonator that will bolt to the manifold and run up toward the fan and back to make it's exit thru the existing hole thru a nice shiny straight pipe. I'll use stainless square tube and have baffles welded in place. I realize the heat close to the hood may scorch the paint so it will have a heat sheild and some foil tape like they use near snowmobile exhausts will be installed inside the hood. I wish my rebuild was done because I'm excited about this project.

But I see a problem with that. If the pipe above the hood is short enough to go under a house garage door it will be blowing the exhaust in your face. That's why mufflers are tall, to get the exhaust above the driver!

The pipe will be the same height as the steering wheel and turned out on the end. Some exhaust in the face is inevitable no matter how tall the pipe is. That I can deal with.

It won't blow off the muffler while it is running, but exhaust will leak around the bottom of the muffler and leave ugly black soot all over the hood. Just cut a notch in the door way of your garge to make it fit in.

Depending on how wide you make the notch depends on how accurate of a driver you need to be. :>) I am lucky in that my C just fits under my garage door. Less than 1/2" of clearance. On a serious note. Just be sure to duck. I have heard of at least on person that didn't duck and got pinned between the steering wheel and the door frame. Needless to say he was the one who lost the battle.
