Does the neutral rattle (with clutch out) occur more frequently (or with more intensity) when the tractor is warmed up? Does light foot pressure on the clutch pedal cause it to go away - if so, it just might be "gear rattle" which is not nice to have but it does NO harm o/wise. Many factors go into this issue but poor engine idle quality, worn clutch disc, low viscosity trans gear oil, etc can aggrivate it. If NOT described as above, look for other causal factors.

Have you adjusted the clutch recently? You might want to try that.

Hi James, have a 454 that has been doing the same thing for years. We replaced clutch, throwout and release bearing and still does it. If you lift the Hi/Lo/Rev shift lever slightly above the N position does the rattle stop?
Also the rattle is more noticeable if the range transmission is in 3rd or 4th gear.

we have a bad ignition switch on the 685. when you push the clutch in sometimes it sounds like bad things are going on with the clutch.
(on ours) It's actually the starter trying to engage the flywheel that"s already turning. quick test: wiggle the key switch with the clutch pressed in and it goes away. hope this helps you before you tear open the tractor.

Does it slip under load? i.e. in high range going down the road, might be noisy input shaft???
