The back of the key cly broke off, I have the key leads connected with a jumper wire. I have 12.4 volts from the key wire to the rear most terminal on the electical blocks forward and above the key area , but not on the other terminals forward of where the key wire connects. Seems like only .4 volts....Should they have more volts. I can"t get it to run, it turns over, throtle moved 3/4 full. I do not get Black smoke while trying to crank it. I have ordered a service manual. Any Ideas of what I can try while I wait for the Postman? I need to know the wiring scheme. I don't know much about the tractor. We've had it for 20+ years, it was running 2 weeks ago. The red Light indicator below the key area dose not come on any more.

The only part the electrical system has in starting your 1066 is to provide fast enough cranking to generate compression enough heat to ignite the diesel. Black smoke at cranking would not be normal but if it is cranking over but not starting you should be getting a whitish gray smoke. There should be a noticeable difference between the shot off and run positions in the amount of smoke. The pump is designed to go to maximum fuel delivery for starting when ever the throttle is not in the shut off position so opening the throttle any more than a little above low idle is not necessary. the maximum fuel delivery is controlled by the presence of engine oil pressure so if it does not start before the oil pressure comes up you need to wait a couple of minutes before trying again.

I will check if I'm getting fuel at the injectors. It is getting some fuel to the pump, I cracked the fitting before the pump and it was wet. Fuel filters are 2 years old. I think I will top off the fuel in the tank as well, its on the low side, judged by using a stick down the tank, fuel gauge won't come on. It worked several weeks ago but won't come on now, nor does the amp gauge show any discharge while cranking. Thanks.

rezner: Your fuel filters are TWO YEARS OLD, and you have the nerve to ask what's wrong. Probably dirty terminals is all that is affecting the gauges. GET YOURSELF A MANUAL and set up a maintenence schedule.

If the key is messed up, it is probably the reason the gages aren't working.

If it "cranks" to speed, electrical is not your problem because it is a diesel.

When was the last time you put fuel filters in it?

Unless a safety shutdown system or other modification has been made.

I don't think any thing special has been added electricaly. The throtle lever has a shut off mode. When running, if you only turn the key off, it still runs. You have to pull the throtle all the way down towards your left to shut it off. Also when trying to start it, if you turn the key on but DO not move the throtle lever over towards the right, past the shut down mode, it will never start, the engine will crank but not start. The key provides power to the starter only I guess??

Took me a few seconds to remember, but that's right. You don't need the electrical system to work on a 1066 in order for it to run, unless some goober wired in an electrical solenoid to shut off the fuel. That's not stock, and figuring out where it is, you're on your own.

Are you getting fuel to the engine? Crack a line and see.
