I finaloly got to the point of trying to start my H last night! I had soldered the cables and wired up the tractor myself, and I think I did something wrong. I cranked it a few times and some sparks shot out behind the starter switch. They ignited some gas I had spilled over the tank while fueling it! I jumped off the tractor and ran into the garage to find my fire extinguisher, but couldn't find it! When I ran back the entire back end of the tractor was in flames! I managed to kick off the parking break so the tractor could roll to the street away from my house in case it blew up. My wife called the fire department which took about 10 minutes to get there, but it was too late. Fire scorched the entire top of the H and melted the tires! I feel lucky I wasn't hurt, but now I don't have a tractor!

If only.....
Nah, not really. But, if it ever does actually happen, buy a toy tractor next time.
Meanwhile, keep plugging away.

Yes cruel joke, we were all interested in your project and were concerned that it went wrong. Next year we will note the date and not listen to anyone on that date. Please post pictures of your H when finished, but be carefull, your story could have been true, strange things can happen, hope not to you or me. An H is better than it seems on paper. We pulled 2 16" plows behind ours for acres and acres, now people want a 40hp tractor to do the same thing and are not convinced an M will pull it. Funny.

It's not an April's fools joke, it is now a prophesy cause the next time I'm in CA with some matches....

I had a motorcycle catch fire years ago while I was sitting on it at the gas pumps from spilled fuel. I had to jump off and push it out by the street. Then ran back to get my pack off the back of it. A guy came out of the station with a fire extinguisher and asked if he could help but by then I told him it was too late. Honda had just recalled it to put a new gas cap on. The new one fit kinda loose. When it fell over at the edge of the road, gas just poured out the cap, run under the back end and burned. It didn't explode or anything. Gas just kept pouring running out of the loose cap.

What bad luck you are having with your tractor.

If you post your mailing address, I will send a donation towards the rebuilding process. What new parts are you needing after the fire?

Heating the cable ends with gasoline fires to solder them is contraindicated!!! Jim

Not yet, I'm still trying to find a crimp. Going to the auto hobby shop after work today to see if they have one. I really hope they do. If not, I'm not sure where I'm going to find one. I got a quote for $45 to build them, which seems like a lot of money to do the small amount of work involved, so I really want to do it myself.

I sent you an e-mail on Sunday. Looking forward to reading the answers.

Check with a forklift company, they carry ends and a crimper for the electric units.

Haha you got me for a bit there too. Funny thing is, my H I've been working on actually DID start on fire this weekend right in the shop! Had the fourth spark plug out and dad was cranking it over to get all the gas out...totally forgot the spark plug wire sitting right in front of the hole. A 2 foot flame shot out of that little hole...got the fire blown out and luckily didn't hurt anything...just cleaned up the spilled gas nicely! Never did get her running but how else to learn...?

Good day fellas

Josh

Go ahead and laugh, damya!

About 40 years ago, I actually just about burned up the BN that I just finished restoring. Same scenario. We were cultivatin' beans at the time and came in for lunch. Afterward, I went out and refueled the tractor and spilled a little (the old hand crank pump on the bulk tank). Didn't really do anything electrical, but there was a bare wire in there someplace under the tank that chose that moment to start sparkin'. Well, I started scrapin' up dust from the ground to throw on it and sent my little brother flyin' to the house to get Grandpa. I was able to pull the wire away and it never did burst into flame, but you can bet the cultivatin' was held up for an hour or so until that wire got replaced.

So . . . ya got your cables made?

Well, last year's joke was the gaining of a $500 SMDVTA. So, I had to balance.

On a serious note, I will be headed out your way to pick up a 1923 Oldsmobile grain truck I just bought in Los Alamos between Santa Barbra and Santa Maria. Looks like the Beverly Hillbillys truck but all restored minus Grannys rocker. Be headed out that way this month and will have an empty trailer in case I don"t find something to haul out there. I could bring you another tractor!

We have a huge antique farm equipment show in Tulare, CA on the 19th and 20th. It might be worth the divert.

That might be fun! The truck I am getting will fit right in! Lets not race though, your H might leave this thing in the dust as it only goes about 23 MPH top speed or the warranty will be voided!

geez mike that is terrible, so sorry to hear something like that happen. thank god no one was hurt!!! before you do anything rash, i doubt if your h is not going to be repairable. most all of the castings and such should be fine, the gear cases should be good also. its just going to take more time than originally anticipated. make a list and post some photos of what you need, i'll keep my eyes open for parts for you, i'm sure the other guys will help out too!!
