Bought the tractor with no lights and no fuse in box. Lights are there, just no wires. So, are there any wires that need to be added to the screws one the switch before running out to the lights?

I looked at the diagram from Robert M's. Mine has fuse holder built onto the swich back. I see a "z"looking wire for the lights "dimmer" and mine is hanging on the bottom. Oh, Mine is a delco-remy. I know to hook headlights to #3 and taillight to #2. My #1 is part of the fuse set-up.

I checked continuity and played with two wires. It involved the #3 and screw next to it,dimmer. I jumped from the one next to #3 post to coiled piece, then from the other end of coiled piece up to #3.

I can't get continuity on #2 at all. Have I messed it all up or on right track? It's out, in-hand and will put into tractor soon so fire-away if you can help, Tnanks, Dan

it is a 4-poss switch...I think at the bottom is't rear light, up one="off" up onemore = lowbeam and last up = highbeam. All my manuals show generator and lots of wires to a v-regulator and I have a 12v conversion/alternator

the correct 4 position for an H has only 2 positions for lights. the other two are for charge rate. clockwise L H D B. Low charge, High charge, Dim, Bright

Since you have an alternator conversion, you should have a 3 position switch from an H: O D B; Off, Dim, Bright.

or you can put on a 4 position from a newer such as 56 series: O D B R; Off Dim Bright, Rear worklight.

the H 4-position is NOT the same as the newer 4-position. it is a switch with two seperate switching components built into it.

if you use the H 4-position on your current system, you will have two positions that do nothing (lights off). You cannot easily use those positions like the light terminals since they short to ground.
a continuity tester, voltage tester, multi-meter, and fused jumper wires are your best friends.

Is this a three- or four-position switch?

Do you have an Operators Manual for your H ? They have illustartions showing the back of the switch and which wires go where. It also has wiring diagrams in the maintenance section. They do not, however, use Bob M's numbering system.
