Could owners, and those with 460 diesel experience, please comment on the strong/weak points of this model? There is a 460 diesel row-crop selling at auction in my area soon. Specifically, does the 460 suffer from the same rear-end problems the 560 often had? Also, how reliable and economical is the diesel in this model? The number of hours on the unit are not stated. Thanks in advance for any information and opinions on this.

Thanks to all for the information and opinions. A 460 would seem to be a good economical tractor for mid-range work; hopefully this one will sell reasonably, and not need too many repairs.

I have a 460 d that I purchase 4 years ago. It is a great little tractor. The 460 d is somewhat rare. I have rebuilt this tractor and can anwser alot of questions on it. It you decide to rebuild the motor you will have to change the piston rods if they have .875 wrist pins. I love this tractor !

To get a 460 Diesel to start reliably you need yo use the original valve recession specs instead of the updated specs. Early specs call for valve recession of .003 to .048 from the surface of the head. Later specs call for a minimum of .048. get those valves installed as close to .003 recession and they will start fairly well.

We had a 460 D Wheatland new. Everything was great except starting, that short stroke doesn't generate enough heat for a restart after killing it, without using the glow plugs. These glow plugs, starter and batteries, must be kept in as good as new condition or you have starting problems. Grinding away on the starter, after a long period on the glow plugs and then a misfiring start is normal. We even bought another one years later, same problems. Darald

My neighbor has a 460D. I have done some work on it. It had to have the injection pump rebuilt, which ran $700. I don"t think it is a weak point, but they are costly. It needed a new head gasket and a new valve. He bought it new and farmed with it for many, many years. He is 92 now. It did not have a problem with the rear end. I have read though that the beefed up ones are stamped with a v or something on the plate. They did the work on them in the field.

My neighbor says it was hard to start when it was new (in the cold) and it still is hard to start. This is how I learned about it because I would pull him every spring to get it going for the first time. It would start after that. He said they took it back and worked on it several times when new to see if it could be fixed to start easier, but it never really helped. It is a strong tractor and runs great when good and warmed up.

we have a 560 in our family for over 40 years and no major problems. only replaced one rear axle brg.no diff. problems.engine was o/h 2 times.very economical on diesel, less than 2 g/hr.doing field work. yard work a tank lasts forever.use the t/a as it was designed for and no problem.mostly dont use it.yes, keep good batt. and glow plugs. hold glow plugs about 40 sec. push starter button and its running in 3or4 engine turns.you need good starter rpm or forget it, it will not start.this is a good example of more amps with 2 - 6 volt batt. than 1- 12 v.overall i will give them a good rating.one more thing is the 560 has much better steering than the 460.in the utlity models.

I"ve been around 560"s all my life.

At one time there were 7 in the neighborhood during the mid 60"s.

2 gassers and 5 diesels. All but 1 on them were pulling 4-16"s plows. The other one was pulling 5-14"s. 3 are still in the neighborhood today.

NOT A SINGLE ONE OF THEM HAD REAREND PROBLEMS.

Never knew a rear end problem exsisted in them till I got on this web site 3 years ago.

There were also 4 460"s in the neighborhood. And none of them had a rearend problem either. Our 460 pulled the planter and harrow for 12 years. And lived under a loader for 25 years. We replaced the clutch 3 years ago and that was the first time to open up the tractor. Still had the orginal engine and all when it burned up in a fire last summer. It was a gasser.

Diesels could be a little tuff to start sometimes but otherwise I think they were a good all around tractor. If you keep the glowplugs working and the battery system in good shape they were fine.

I also have been around these models since childhood and currently have both a 460 D and 560D. I never have heard of any recalls on the 460 model as they were not turning the HP that the 560 was. I never personally heard of any 560 rearend problems in our area but there must have been some since I.H. took most of them back in and beefed them up. If the 560 has the triangle on the serial tag plate it has been updated. The 460D is a good versatile tractor for chores and medium power fieldwork. Too many boys tried to make the 460 do 560 work and then you can have problems with running hot ,head problems and rear axle bearings. They are cold natured beasts and have to have all 6 glow plugs working properly to start, yes even in summer and good hot batteries as they need to spin fast. Try to keep the ether away from them or you will have big boom!. My current 460D is turned way up for pulling and turbocharged so it is really not a fair comparison to a stock model. But so far the drive train has held up to what we've fed it. I love driving a 460 and will earn its keep in the stable. Diesel is a 236 cu in and can be turned into a 282 with a 560D crank. Not bad on fuel and with a 3 pt conversion kit can do a lot of work. Sorry too many thoughts here this a.m. Migraine
