Last night I sprayed my emblem with a fresh coat of gloss black. This evening I was going to try to roll on the silver so it wouldn't get down into the black. That didn't work real well, so I figured I'd just shoot the whole thing with silver, then hand paint in the black later. So I shoot the silver, and the black starts bubbling off.
So, now I guess I have to strip the whole thing, then hand paint the whole thing so the paints don't mix? Mucho pain in the rearo.

Mike, you have a classic case of incompatible paints. Make sure that the black paint, and the silver are from the same manufacturer, and read the labels.

I was thinking about setting the whole tractor project aside for a year or two, but I'm rushing to get it running just so I can get you off my back! :P
Seriously, I was doing this while I was helping work our yard sale this morning. I like to multi-task.

Just so you know, I'm collecting information (via e-mail) on how to properly solder my battery cables.

You need to let the first coat dry before trimming the other color. I messed mine up also before getting it right. My 240 U emblems are aluminum but I think the tin would paint the same. I used mineral spirits to clean before painting. David.third party image

Dave:

Whoa, back up please. Did you handpaint the white, or use some sort of mask? They look great . . . you must have a steady hand. I have emblems for my 240 U that I wish to paint, but trying to figure out a technique first.

Would like to know more about how you did them.

Paul, really my girlfriend did the white trim. Really!! I sprayed the red though. She wanted to get married so if I need anything else painted I'll have to mess it up. David.

That should have read "the first one I messed up". If you need help painting them get either a girlfriend or a sign painter. The sign painter will be the cheapest by far. David.

Actually, no. It's a war tractor, so the emblem is made of tin, or something else. A magnet sticks to it, so it's not aluminum.

the emblembes were never painted white.you should have just polished up the aluminum unpainted areas. the only paint used was the red areas.
